New member. We are a young family from Nebraska looking for our first light weight travel trailer that we can pull with our 2017 Ford Explorer. Joining for advice and insight on the best brands. Ideally would like dry weight around 3k. Needs to sleep 4 and have a dry shower. Provided that we enjoy it as much as we anticipate, we would upgrade our tow vehicle and trailer in a few years when our kids are older and bigger.

Hi,
Welcome to the Forum! Most people pick a RV by the floorplan. Tow weight is very important since you want to get that just right.
Under "RV Forums" at the top of the page, there is a "Travel Trailer" forum for discussion. Check it out.
You need to consider that in the TT there is food weight, clothes weight, toys, dishes, you get the idea. In the Tow vehicle. there is the vehicle weight, the gas weight, the people inside that needs to be added and so on.
What is the tow capacity of your vehicle? Start there and see what you can add. There are a lot of people here with the info you need who will come on and help with the answer you seek.
Welcome and take your time making the decision.

Thank you! Tow capacity is listed at 5k for my vehicle. We've been looking for awhile. I learn new things to consider frequently. I figured this group would help me quite a bit!

from WA State!
I haven't owned a TT since we traded it off for a MH in 1988 so I'll let the "experts" have at it.

Welcome to the group, great decision on joining to research, I recommend you spend some time looking inside the TT with the intent to understand the different floor plans as mentioned above. It seems like you started at the tow vehicle first which is a must, also start to compare manufacturers and ask questions to us and though some answers will be bias, lol you will get good feedback on what to watch for.
Once you know your limit on towing weight, the floor plan (s) that you like, you then can look at the different price points and options, don’t exclude purchasing used as there are some real deals in the market. Once we picked our floor plan of every 5th wheel we owned and now motor coach (pickup next week) we only looked for that make, model, floor plan etc. it is really fun actually, unless your in a hurry. Good luck and look forward to seeing some photos

Thank you. Yes I've been striving to understand what my vehicle can handle. What a dealer says it can Do and what I think is safe are two different things. I'm aiming for a TT just under 3k. Heading to my first RV show today in KC to check out different floor plans. A hang up we have is my husband is 6'2" and the ones that appear perfect on a paper floor flan typically are too short. Hoping to find some options today! My only other requirement is a dry shower and room to sleep 4...but my boys are small still so I figure in 5 years or such when we are ready to buy a bigger truck then we can upgrade the TT st that point if we need more space.
