Hello to all,
We are first time RV owners and are looking forward to seeing the country we have around us. We were kind of forced into this by COVID since we could no long do our usual week long cruise every 6 months. My wife and I were starting to go stir crazy not being able to take our vacations and decided to try driving to see how that goes. Well, that did not even get off the ground since they insisted we wear masks at the hotel to check in. My wife can not wear a mask because it sets off her asthma and I just do not feel like wearing one because I think the damn thing does nothing and is stupid. (nothing political, just scientific fact.) Anyway, that left us with having to have our own Private “hotel” room that we had to take with us. So that is how we ended up looking for a motor home. Trailer was not an option for my wife so that left us with a powered unit, I travel a lot throughout Texas for my work. I am a bee keeper and bee removal specialist. And on my way home one day, while driving through Rockwall, I stumbled across an RV place with a lot of trailers and a Motor home (1995 Fleetwood, Pace Arrow American Flyer.) I stopped to see if it was for sale and found out that the guy (Joe Slade, Slade’s RV Repair) was not a sales lot. He strictly did RV renovations. However, this particular one was going to be up for sale once it was finished. It was purchased by this elderly couple 5 years earlier and they were restoring it. But, the gentleman passed away before they could finish and she was getting rid of it, so I picked it up for a real deal because it still needed some things to be fixed on it. We picked it up and 2 days later we were on the road to Port Orange, Florida. We took a gamble, not knowing anything about its history of usage or condition of the mechanicals , but, we decided what better way to find out what all is wrong than to see what breaks when in use. It was our “shake down” trip as well as our “can I even do this” trip. We made it there, picked up our son and his Jeep, and came home for Christmas and now we had the list of things that needed to be repaired.
Now that everything is almost done, we are going on our first RV trip for the fun of it. Hoping to leave this month to go to Natchez, Ms. We are going to see the town in one of Gregg Isles’ book series. My wife and I are avid Audio book fans and so this is the first of, hopefully, many trips like this. I truly hope is goes well and if it does, we might make it our new “Cruise” vacation even if the cruise ships get back on the seas. Although there is no cheaper vacation than a cruise. I am finding out that RV parts are anything but cheap. I am beginning to think I could buy a Lamborghini and own it for less than repairing an RV. Fortunately, I am pretty good at fixing things so I only have to pay for the parts, not the labor, saving us around $145 an hour, making it a bit more affordable for an “Average Joe” like me.
