Hi Everybody,
I am introducing myself and thanking all the fix-it-yourself posters. Very helpful.
I am Chris Atkinson from Redwood City, CA. I purchased a Keystone High Country fifth wheel and F250 SD 6.7 TD from my sister Val in Kentucky and drove them back to California. It was my first time driving a fifth wheel, and it was scary and fun at the same time. As much as I thought I knew how to maneuver the rig after the trip, I still could not back it into my driveway properly. SMH.
Before we left Kentucky, we had an RV service center check the rig for the trip and had them repack the trailer bearings. When it was cleared for travel, we picked it up at closing time (in the dark), and by the time we hooked up the kingpin and trailer electrical plug, the service center was closed up with no one around. I mention this because the brake and running lights did not work! Unbelievable.
We managed the 10 miles home with the hazards - luckily working, and I spent the evening in this forum reading up on how to fix the issue. After learning how to test the plug and figuring out some fuse issues, we thought we were good to go. Not so fast, friends. The trailer lights were still dark. I traced the trailer cord up to the kingpin box, noticed a slice in the cord sheath, and saw a glimpse of stranded copper. Hoping this was the issue, I exposed the sliced area and wires and repaired them. It worked, and we left that night.
I learned much more about RV travel's do's and don'ts on the trip. All I can say is that I was happy and proud to make it home!
Thanks again for the forum support along the way.
Cheers,
Chris and Val
