Hi all: I will possibly be selling my house and hitting the road as a 65-year-old woman with two small dogs in the near (to distant) future.

I have not bought a rec vehicle yet but am am narrowing it down. I am single so I will have to do everything myself. I am thinking used travel trailer. I don't want to get crushed at parks, so I might be boondocking from time to time and need advice on whether solar is worth it.

Can anyone tell me how reasonable it will be to travel with two dogs both just at 19 pounds. Their level of comfort with make or break my decision to do this; they have to be as happy as I am.

I will probably have many more question :(

Thanks

Welcome on board from North Central Arkansas. Where do you expect to travel and what tow vehicle do you have?

Your question is far too broad for a simple answer, but you should find help and support here.

Enjoy your travels.

Welcome to the forum. As everyone will tell you, this is a great place.

As to your question, baby steps.
Research what you are wanting to do. I know that this will be a little time consuming and onerous. Take advantage of the different forums for your questions as some people will skip some and concentrate where their interest and knowledge lies.

I know it is a hot market, but selling your house and going FT is a huuuuuge leap, especially as a newbie. Find something that you are comfortable with, and experiment. Go somewhere for a week and see how it goes. Then two weeks, and so one. Talk with others as you are out and see how they like and ask for their input and suggestions. A face to face conversation with a few knowledgeable folks will answer many of the questions that you have and the multitude of new ones that will arise.

I have a very cautious side that says (if this is what you plan), as a newbie, don't sell your house to finance the FT lifestyle unless you have a reliable stream on income above and beyond SS.

Yea, I will certainly take some kind of maiden voyage for at least a week to see how it goes. I have a 2004 Camry so I need to go really light or get a truck. About selling the house, Nashville rents are so high now that I would more likely rent this for quite a bit and use that as income. I have the ability to save for something small (small used travel trailer). I also do some travel writing for the New York Times, about once or twice a year. I can eke out a living writing for some other national pubs. I don't know where I will be going. I have some pent up wanderlust from living in the South for nearly 20 years and there is a lot of this country I want to see. The urge is to get unstrapped from this life (I take care of my 92 year old mom) and wander to see what the next chapter will bring. I don't want a travel trailer SO small the dogs will get traumatized and the mid-sized travel trailers look so big but that is likely where I will land. In my mind I see doing this for maybe a year until I settle down somewhere. Then again I might just keep going. I have been researching and winding up going in circles. This is the first time on a forum; this seems really really helpful. Thanks!

Welcome and i agree take it slow. If you are really planning on going full time you might consider a slightly larger tt and a pick up to tow it with. Look at multiple options and floor plans before buying anything. There are lots of good folks and good info here to help you out. Enjoy the adventure.

Glad to have you here in the forum with us. You're gonna like it here.

Of course you can do it, and it will nt be a problem for your dogs. There are so many RVers with dogs.

Happy Trails!!!
