New Member checkin from AZ
Hello all,
New member and new to travel trailers. Researching and shopping now for what might work well for my wife and I. Likely used for weekends getaways from AZ heat with possible teen daughter in tow at times.
Prob looking to stay somewhere around 7k GVWR or less MAX to ensure smooth tow - likely more comfortable closer to 6K since first RV. Also probably closer to 25' or shorter due to towing with Full size SUV but, again, new to RV/towing campers.
Couple questions for the seasoned pro's out there:
1) Murphy beds that have a mattress that folds too - are they actually comfortable to sleep or constantly trying to find way to fix the "fold gap" near the upper portion of mattress?
2) How much "cargo" are all of you actually carrying? I've seen a number of fairly low dry weight campers in the mid 3k but spiking up to nearly 7k GVWR - are you all really carrying 1k in water and 2k+ in gear wherever you go? Or, rather, should I be more focused on considering something between Dry and GVWR as more realistic - when would I ever carry 1k in water (fresh/grey/black tanks all full??)
Looking forward to all the research and suggestions.
Thank you,

Welcome from SoAZ.
My better half and I have a light (3K dry) trailer with a very low GVWR (~3,800). We are extremely particular about weight. It sounds like we have a smaller TT than you are looking at.
Can't help on the murphy bed question - I would be interested to hear answers. our current payload weight is taken up largely by replacing the stock mattress with a residential one ...

Not knowing what SUV you have, but guessing a full size, I would stay around 4,500 dry weight after options. Most water tanks will hold around 500 lbs of water. For two people I would estimate 500 to 750 lbs for everything else.
Standard beds in most trailers are not comfortable. Some replace the whole mattress, others add a 3” memory foam topper, which will also fill in the voids for the Murphy bed.
For DW, and I we really enjoy our Lance 1995, feels big inside, but yet small enough to get into more remote sites.

Thanks everyone - we ended up finding a 2015 Lance 1985 that we bought a few weeks ago after looking at dozens of new models of similar size. We ended up paying about the same as the new ones but seems to be a pretty sturdy build quality compared to some of the flimsy stuff we found in the new models.

Congrats on the “new to you” Lance.
Being in AZ, keep an eye on the roof for any small cracks or peeling in the Dicor.
The 1985 is a great trailer, and with proper maintenance it will last you a long time.
