New member for Des Moines, Iowa

Hello All,

I'm going to Augusta, Georgia to pick up my '07 National Tropical April 18th. I've already installed the baseplate and wiring on my Wrangler so that will be ready to go.

Or plan is to do some weekend trips locally this summer and then head south for 3-6 weeks in January. I'm having trouble figuring out campgrounds. I could sure use a source to understand and pick camping locations. This hole deal of booking far in advance has me a little concerned.

Both my wife and I are not real fans of airplanes and hotels so we're really hoping RVing is a good fit. Plus we can take the dog.

Welcome to IRV2 and congratulations on your new RV. I use Reviews of RV Parks and Campgrounds - RV Park Reviews to find good parks. Its a great resource because its parks graded by RVers. I usually throw out the highest and lowest score and read the last 4 or 5 reviews. There is also a tab which gives you a satellite shot of the area, which is helpful. Happy travels.

Congrats on your new MH. I have found that Woodalls is a good reference for CGs. Any good bookstore will have them. They give you tons of info on campgrounds and I have found their rating system to be on the money.

Glad to have you with us.

Welcome from just up the road in MN, although we only spend summers there now. We never book CG's far in advance. Enjoy the new MH.

Hi Robby-Altoona, IA here. We do some local camping so I can help out a bit there. One of our favorites is Saylorville Lake (Corps of Engineers), Prairie Flower Campground, Loops C & D. These sites have concrete pads for the RV and toad and concrete patios with firepits. These can be reserved online. You can reserve government campgrounds through recreation.gov. Here's the site for Prairie Flower Campground:
Facility Details - PRAIRIE FLOWER RECREATION AREA, IA - Recreation.gov

We've also camped at the local KOA and at Adventureland RV Park and some state and county RV parks.

KOA's are easy to reserve online (and most others are also) :
Find a KOA Campground | KOA Campgrounds

We've spent winters in the Rio Grand Valley of South Texas and in Southern California. So I can give you some pointers there.

One of my toads is a Wrangler also. Just make sure that you understand what position the ignition key has to be in for towing and the procedure for putting the transmission in park and the transfer case in neutral for towing. I screwed mine up once and ruined the two front tires on the Jeep. Thankfully I needed new tires anyway!

Congratulations on your motorhome! I'm sure that you will have a blast!

Hi and welcome! We are in Marshalltown IA and have camped around the USA for a number of years. We are certainly willing to be a resource if needed. Please PM me if we can be of service - over the phone or over a beer. We use the resources mentioned in previous threads - all are good to use. I also tow a 2013 4 door Jeep JK so make sure you check the owners manual.

Hello, we are in Sioux city, IA.
If you get over this way, Scenic park in South Sioux City, Nebraska is a nice camp ground by the Missouri River right across from the Argosy casino (river boat). It will be replaced by a land based Hard Rock casino next year.

That's encouraging to hear, I'm interested in just how impromptu one can be RVing heading south in the winter.
