I'd suggest renting an RV for a week or so before buying one.

Good advice we have discussed that. Although i don't think it will give you much of an idea on living in it full time. Big change going from a house to a much smaller motor home. Traveling would keep up the enthusiasm for a while I am sure.

Welcome to the forum. It certainly is a life style change and not for everyone. I would rent an RV for maybe a 2-4 trip and see if you even like RV living. Then go from there.

You are joining a good group of folks here with good info to share.

No it wouldn't tell you much about full timing, however you will quickly discover things you like and DON"T like about the various layouts, etc before you purchase an RV.

There are a bunch of RV dealers between Sacramento and Bakersfield and I suggest hitting most of them to get a good idea of what's available.

Welcome to irv2.com, and your interest in the RV lifestyle. Btw, know exactly where you live. We have a second house in Willow Springs, and my mom lives in Ridgewood.

Noticed you did not mention if you have owned RVs previously, and what type of camping you like. With that in mind, I'll give a very broad view.

We currently own an older class A, and will be going full-time when we retire. We do a couple long trips each year, with frequent small trips with our rig. We have stayed at full hookup RV parks, and done dry camping. Each situation is different having their advantages and drawbacks. RV parks are nice for running both A/Cs in hot weather, as are the longer showers, and park amenities. Dry camping in National Parks is quite different, with no hookups coupled with limited generator run hours. It goes without saying, summer camping in Las Vegas and winter camping in Yosemite is vastly different.

I would recommend renting a class A for a few trips, lasting 7-14 days each, to determine what fits your style. Will allow you to determine what RV features/floor layout you know you will want, what you can live with, and what your deal breakers are.

Spending a few thousand doing this, will save you from spending 125k+ on a rig you don't like.

We have never even been inside a motorhome yet. When we got married 42 years ago we lived in a 12x60 trailer for a couple years. Thats about as close to a motorhome as we have been. Looks like our son is moving to Texas and we are getting too old for our mountain house. Thinking of selling out and doing some traveling before we get too old. Maybe for a couple years anyways.

Good idea, do it while you still have your health and are able to get around.

Experiment with either a rental or a used for weekends and whole weeks. It is a big adjustment and the learning curve can be mighty steep at times, and it's not always sunny and bright when things go wrong like they do on youtube.
