Brand new to the RV community. We just bought our (used) 2004 Dolphin motorhome. As soon as our house sells, we'll hit the road to become snow birders, living in the motorhome full time.
I have a question: Our unit comes with a satellite dome and we will want to subscribe to a satellite service. We wanted Direct TV, but from what I can see, we will have to buy upgraded equipment for $1300.00 first. It seems that Dish Network doesn't require new equipment. Ours is 8 years old. Can anybody confirm this?

Welcome to the forum! We also hail from Spokane,WA and full time in a 2004 Dolphin!!!!
This has been a great motor home that we purchased used. I have been using the Dish Network equipment with no problems. The Dome on the roof had to be reprogrammed using the small "dip switches" inside the dome for the Dish network and not Direct. This was a simple fix and it has been serving us well for about two years now. Feel free to contact us for any questions about the motor home, we are not experts but have been around the block in thing a few times.

What kind of dome? I would think that Direct would work but don't know. You won't get HD with a dome and Direct but I have no problem with a dome and Direct TV.

Welcome aboard! We left Spokane when I was in 4th grade. Attended 2nd grade just north of there in Newport.
Assuming your dome is programed for Direct TV you will probably be able to get the non-HD programing, but more and more of their channels are transitioning to HD all the time. No dome will give you full HD capability. To upgrade to something like the Traveler 3005 dish would cost you something just south of $2k, I'd guess. You can pick up an HD receiver for $99, or DVR for $199, sometimes a bit less. My $2k estimate on the sat dish includes estimated labor so you could save 5 or 6 hundred if you were able to install it yourself, or know someone that could.
I guess I'd measure the cost against your long range plans. If you plan to sell or trade in a year that would be one thing, but if you expect to be using this coach for several years I'd do the upgrade.
Good luck!

Thanks for the info! Looks like we'll go with Dish! This Dolphin only has 8,289 miles on it and looks brand new! Can't wait to hit the road in it. Thanks again!

Our sat antenna is the original (10 yrs old), all I had to do was change the programming from Dish to Direct (Sat 110 to 101) with the simple push of a button.

I think your best bet is to go to Dish, they have a plan where you only pay for time used and can be turned and off whenever you need it and be billed for time used only. No charge when not in use and no charge to turn on and off. In any case good luck in finding what works for you. Safe travels.
