Hi people, we just bought a 1989 28ft Fleetwood Southwind with 30,000 miles on it. only problem is that when we are going up a big hill it loses power and it slows down to about 35mph, and sometimes it back fires on the freeway, any Ideas what it may be???carburetor maybe??

usually backfire is a spark plug problem, which also leads to unburnt fuel

Start with something simple first like gas line antifreeze to eliminate any moisture in the gas (Heet brand, red container, isopropyl, one container per every ten gallons of fuel you think you have in the tank, couple $$ per container)

Next replace the fuel filters, then if still needed check fuel system pressure.

If your motorhome is on a Chevrolet chassis, check or replace the fuel filter mounted on the frame - about halfway between the fuel tank and engine.

A 1989 with only 30,000 miles has spent a lot of time sitting. A complete tune-up may be in order, if it has not been done lately. I am a firm believer in a product called Sea Foam, available at most auto parts and wally world. It is an injector, carb jet cleaner, stabilizer, you name it. I call it a mechanic in a can. Brian

Since its been sitting change ALL fluids, belts,hose, filters and a complete tune up. Check the date code on the tires. Over 6 years old REPLACE them regardless how they look. Good luck and welcome.

X2 Chief02, all of that maintenance ( except the tires) is probably cheaper than the cost of the tow when there is a failure on the road. Broke down on the side of the road in an RV is not a good place to be!!
