new to RVing Looking for 5th w for 4 seasons

Hello, I a new to this site and to RVing. We have a VW westfalia, but have never had anything larger. We would like to buy a 5th wheel so we can live in in full time when we retire in 4-5 years. We have three kids still at home, but after 5 years we will be down to 1 and want to homeschool him and travel. What should we consider buying (size-wise and age wise) at this point as we have never had a big rig. Should we buy newer and keep it, or buy older and get a newer when we want to go full time? Also, it is hard to find ads that mention 4 season-use. What should I look for--what do they call it? winter package??? What issues do we need to think about if we are going to live there all the time? Maintenance issues, any restrictions on how long you can stay in a place, etc. What do people do about mail when they full-time?

Thanks in advance. Any suggestions would be so helpful.

For insulation, you need to do research to find out what ratings it has. There is no industry standard for "four seasons" use.

Welcome and glad to meet you!

Questions such as yours might best find answers in the appropriate forums. Many people in this forum do not visit this section. Perhaps posting your question under 5th wheels or TT would get more answers.

Welcome to IRV2! We're sure glad you joined the gang here!

I would definitely recommend a 5th wheel if you have or can get the right truck to pull it. We had a 36' Cedar Creek for 10 years before getting the MH and we loved it!

I personally would look for a used rig, 5 years old or less, one owner, with all the bells and whistles you want. Search the Classifieds here on IRV2 and also RVTrader.com. There's lots out there to choose from!

You might want to check out the fulltiming area here on IRV2. Those folks can answer any questions you may have! Enjoy the forum!

Good luck, happy trails, and God bless!
