We do not own an RV yet...just made the decision to get one, but it is likely a few years ahead. Our plan is to sell our home and furniture, and hit the road for a couple of years to see the good old US of A. Visiting this site to find out if we are making a wise choice.

A couple of concerns that we hope to find answers to by watching this site are

1) we understand that mpg is about 8...seems pretty expensive, after buying the MH, and with upkeep and eventual maintenance

2) finding places to park the rig are of concern...availability and cost

3) neither of us have ever driven such a large vehicle, so that is a big concern...especially with pulling a trailer with a vehicle on it.

I'm sure these things can be overcome, but it all seems a bit scary right now.

Anyway, I look forward to learning from you pros and hope to join you before long.

Welcomed to Irv. Basically i'm at the same state you are. Researching all the models and systems. Watching all the how to and review videos. Learning hwh and aqua hot, lippert and Atkins. Finding out about bird and toad. Uvw and CCC. Fun fun times. Mileage can be scary, but the cost of the RV...

I now have a wish list that includes hydralift.... Enjoy this period and remember the toys in your RV will only be cooler and shinier when thou make the jump.

You are going about it correctly by considering the real expenses of owning a motorhome before you purchase one. Consider the buy-in cost and the exit cost (depreciation can be considerable). Maintenance is factor and this along with gas, and accommodations are very much dependent on, of course, how far you drive and how often you travel and where you want to stay. You'll need insurance. All this goes against whatever your expenses were before when you were a normal homeowner. I have read several articles that are convincing that if done right, full timing can be significantly less expensive than typical home owning - which is exciting! As far as driving a big rig with a trailer or flat towed car, it depends on your confidence level and your previous experience and skill. I had driven a lot of big trucks before and pulled many big trailers BUT I was pretty nervous the first time I drove a class A. I got pretty good at it quickly. My wife had virtually no experience with any of these things but she also drives our class A very well now - it just some practice. So I think that most people who are willing to try it can accomplish it. Best of luck to you. It's a wonderful, wonderful experience.
