Newbie check-in - Seeking advice before plunging in

Well I've hit that point in life where if I really wanted to retire a bit early and travel the country I suppose I could.
It will just be me and my wife, kids are grown and supposed to be able to take care of themselves for the most part.
So I'm not sure about one of these big rigs, seems like the smaller class C would be a better fit for us.
For some reason I don't like the idea of a travel trailer. Seems like there's a big investment in a vehicle to tow the trailer as well as the investment in the trailer. On the other hand, there's only one engine to maintain and you can unhitch and get around once you arrive.
The Class C route seems to want to tow an extra vehicle for getting around once you arrive. But, it seems like a lower investment, an old jeep for example which also allows for getting to more difficult places in the mountains.
I enjoy hiking, backpacking actually so I envision a Class C camper towing a jeep. Base camp in the campground with the ability to drive to trailheads for hiking, fishing, backpacking etc.
Is it realistic to get a Class C camper for under 10K? I seem them advertised even below 5k usually needing some work.
I've seen a 1975 Dodge Sportsman for $2,500 and a 1997 Winnebago Rialta for $7,900. Is pairing something like one of these up with a small jeep realistic?
Well, the research has started. Looking forward to advice from the experts in the community.

We are glad you joined us. I really can't help with your question as all my rigs were Class A. My wife has claustrophobia and each rig we purchased was bigger than the last one with more slides.

Absolutely you can pair an older 2 door Jeep up with either of those. I like Rialta's. Seen many on the rd. Best of luck to you.

Rialta VW

Rialtas are nice, small enough to park on a regular parking spot, like every thing else you need to get lucky. I'm looking at a 2000 model, with areound 41.000 miles (claimed), I'll be looking at it this coming Wednesday. My firend pick up one couple years ago and he loves it so far.
