we just bought our first motorhome-an old 1993 national seabreeze. we had an old slide in truck camper when we were first married about 12 years ago. our kids were born shortly thereafter and we upgraded to an old popup. we had a few trips in each (before they rotted to the ground) and went for several years not camping at all. our best vacation ever was 10 days at Virginia beach in that popup....so we decided it was time to try it again. 3 month worth of craigslist scouring finally put the national in our driveway for an unbelievable price. had to travel a few hours to get it...but has turned out to be just fine.
joined good sam because we figured one good tow bill would break the bank...hope that'll help.
have went through and tested all systems,and all seem to work properly.
the 3 page to-do list is now down to just a few items...almost time for the family and I to have a local "weekend shakedown" trip to see how it's gonna do....then it'll be vacation ready hopefully.

anybody got any good advice for the young newcomers?
how about any east coast/mid-atlantic must destinations?

Gee, you already live in a gorgeous state, I'd hit the state parks first. For a long trip I'd go the the "Jetty State Park" in Cape Canaveral. Not only is it interesting seeing the big cruise ships leave the Port Canaveral dock but there is the possibility that you can see the submarines come in. Don't pass up the opportunity to see NASA while there. You can pretty well burn up an entire day there, very interesting and the short movies are spectacular.

this thing seems to run and drive well enough to hit florida this summer...ive never seen the gulf coast and wanted to head down that way...but I think the wife wants to keep it a little closer to home for the first few trips. hopefully if we can get it out a few times this year, hopefully she'll gain some confidence in it's abilities.

If you do make it to the gulf coast after some local shakedowns, I would higher recommend Henderson Beach SP in Destin FL. Just love that place. Great beach, large sites, local everything.

Fairystone State Park, SP amenities, not far from home AND...lake on property for water activities if you are into that, hiking and camping, AND...
Fairystones!!!, really!! these are actually stones that form a "cross" and you walk around and pick them up!!! or dig for them...or walk the creek and find them...
I could give you all the rock background, check the link...google "fairystones"...tons of info. OR just hang out and listen to the excitement from the kids when they find their first ones....

Welcome, neighbor, Live in Craig County, just over the mountains from you. Don't worry about your rig, just enjoy. A local shake-down is a good idea. As for local trips, there's a nice Jelllystone in Rockbridge County and a very good little campground in Floyd called Daddy Rabbit"s.
