Starting the Long Shopping Process

I have a couple of years to retirement, but the DW and I are considering a class A to travel around in. Boy there are a lot to choose from and that makes for some fun RV shows!

I've seen the several of the discussions on gas vs diesel but I still have a question. Do you think there is a weight threshold where you would not consider a gas RV even for mostly flat driving? I understand the type of driving and the different size gas engines, but it would seem that at some point it would be simply too much strain on a gas engine no matter the size.

I know it's kind of an odd question.

Thanks

We started with a 36 foot Tiffin, Ford V10, and pulled a Honda CRV. We had no problems going through the Smokies and through upstate NY. It does get a bit load though on some of the steeper grades where your pushing 5K RPM. The GVWR was 24K which I would think is about the max you would want in a gas coach.
We have since traded for a DP. More luxury, much much quieter, and better handling on the highways.
There are several threads on Gas versus Diesel, try searching this forum.

It's not odd at all. In fact, it's pretty astute for a newby to come up with. It appears from what's available in the market place that the upper limit for gas power is 24-26k pounds. Diesel class As start there and go to 45-50k. For the last few years the Ford V10 has been the sole available power plant for gas coaches. Diesels start with the Cummins ISB at 6.7 liter and go up to the Cummins ISX 15 liter. The little ISB has very similar horse power to the V10 but about 50% more torque. The diesels produce their power low in the rpm band and they are red lined at an rpm where the V10 is just starting to produce power. No where near the sound and fury with the diesel. A real secret benefit with the diesels is the fact that they are mostly paired with an Allison 3000 or 4000 transmission which are as close to bulletproof as you can get.

Welcome to the forum. The Gas - Diesel debate will probably go on for ever. I think the bottom line is what GVW do you need or want, and what is your budget. I have a DP now and would not go back to a gasser, but I had several gas rigs that we really liked and did a great job for us. Just be ready the first time that V-10 kicks into super-passing gear and the engine goes to 5,000 rpm in a flash...It will scare the hell out of you..lol...

Welcome and glad to meet you!

I believe that the vast majority of diesel owners would also agree they would not want to go back to gas, whereas many gas owners would say they would love to go to diesel. It depends on your budget and needs.

Thanks

The OP didn't ask which is better, if you would get one or another, or even a gas/diesel debate. He only inquired about weight.

IMO,"flat driving" doesn't require a whole lot of torque, so if you are looking at a gasser, I doubt if there would even be a weight threshold that you would consider.

There is a weight threshold.

If you plan on towing a heavy vehicle or a big trailer then the gasser is limited to roughly 6,000lb.

He didn't mention anything about towing. He was only referring to the weight of the motorhome in relationship to flat "driving"...NOT towing.
