Google released some new ad tags which will hopefully address this bug with certain versions of IE. For those who have had troubles, please report back if you continue to experience the same issue or if the problem appears resolved. Thanks!

For reference - I noticed yesterday and today the problem is back again. A random issue that may or may not be there. Different ads on different pages so never know when.
It also affects browser history data. You may or may not be able to use the forward/back buttons to move between pages. Just editing this post I experience the issue. Hit back button then had to select the thread from the TOC to edit this information into the post.
Also, there seems to be a floating pop-up ad in the mix.

Another thing, click on the "X" to make sure adds are not still loading when you hit the back button.
It's not just this site. The companies that create the adds have found a way to temporarily disable your back button. Google anything, popcorn, chair, etc. You'll see the same problem at a lot of sites. It's Corporate Greed and until the search engine owners start dis-allowing($$$That will never happen$$$) adds that steal your back button, it is just going to get worse.

I'm so used to Opera, it is going to be hard to change. Opera comes with most of the ad-ons already installed. one thing about Opera is that when you hover over a thread title, the pop-up stays up. The last time I tried FF and I.E. it only stayed up for about 7 seconds. I'm a slow reader.

While I haven't myself had this issue here, I have come across it on 2 other websites, one a Yahoo forum & the other a home furnishings site. After clicking around & back & forth over multiple pages, my back arrow will cease functioning. Both sites do have ads on them - a possibility Dunner mentioned might be a culprit. Unfortunately, site ads pay the bills for websites, so unless I want to have to pay to frequent the sites I have back button issue with, I'm resolved to put up with the issue.

Thanks Lori, I know you guys are doing all you can to keep things working properly here. I guess I should consider myself lucky that this is the only site that I spend a lot of time on that has the problem.

I use Opera 10.10 and DO NOT have the problem with this site. I rarely use the back arrow on any of my browsers, but when I do, it works on this site. I have my mouse buttons programmed for back and reload and use it instead of the browser buttons.
I do have the problem on many other sites, including Google. It appears that there are programmers that like to keep your attention on their page. Corporate Greed. Those sites will NEVER get my money.
After explaining it several different ways, the guys on my truck mailing list finally admitted that they too have the stolen back button on some pages.
What they suggested and does work is to rapidly hit backspace or the back button two or more times. Also, if the "X" is still showing, the page and ads are still loading. Try clicking the "X" at the top of your browser first.

I tried the ctl click just to see what it did and now there is a message on the left top ( where the page name usually is) that says " back arrow not working" but it is. Go figure. So far I haven't had any problem.
