Paragragh Hard Returns Issues?

I have yet to see anyone else complain but the post editor adds extra hard returns between paragraphs when I hit post that I then have to go edit out. I've seen other members' posts with these extra spaces that they didn't edit out.

Is this a settings issues or a software issue? It's been happening for several months.

P.S. I didn't edit out the extra returns between these paragraphs so the mods can see what I mean.

Didn't use to do that then one day it started adding line spaces and is still doing it

Other posts have been made about it with no response or acknowledgement (that I have seen)

I only added one line space between sentences in this post

On Edit: 2 line spaces show so 1 line space was added
If I do NOT add line space no additional ones are added (just when you line space between sentences/paragraphs does the EXTRA spacing show up)????

I've tried not adding an extra return too. Doesn't work like you've indicated. But when I edit the post, it works as it should. What looks like one blank line in the editor is one blank line in the thread.

Very strange and annoying. If you write a longer post or have several short paragraphs, the added space can make a post take up a lot more real estate.

Are you using Fire Fox ? Here’s a thread from June where it seemed that Fire Fox had changed the way it recognizes new lines and new paragraphs.

I'm in Google Chrome now.

We'll see how this looks.

Double tap on the 'enter' key looks like a single space in the editor.

But does it look like that now?

It, indeed, does look correct in Google Chrome and it looks normal when I load this page in Firefox. Must be a Firefox issue with the forum post editor. But can't seem to find a solution on line.

Well, it looks like a settings change in Firefox helped. It's deep in the settings and you'll have to change it manually in about:config. The setting is: editor.use_div_for_default_newlines and it should be set to False to make the forum carriage return work correctly.

Use this at your own risk. Changing the setting in the config editor can void your warranty and cause unexpected issues with Firefox. Always keep the setting handy in case you need to change it back. Furthermore, I have not tested this change to see if it affects other text editor in other forums or websites. It might. Again, use at your own risk and don't say I didn't warn you.

Here is the link to where I found this change:

Firefox inserting extra blank line between paragraphs • mozillaZine Forums

BTW, I made the change and I didn't have to edit this post to remove extra line breaks.

Update: I did a test in the other place I use a text editor the most, YouTube. This change seemed to have no adverse effects and if you read that link in my above post, it makes sense. I won't go into it here. In any case, this appears to solve the problem but there still might be issues I have yet to see. Time will tell.

This is a function of the browser and pops up from time to time as browsers update. Typically it will resolve when the browser next updates. One simple work around is to change user settings to the basic editor interface.

Bumping this as Firefox is doing it again. Seems as though the last update, or two, changed the value back to true.

Post #6 is the way to repair it.
