Questions to my Profile Comments
Ok ; I'll admit I don't go everywhere in the forums , and my understanding of all things computer and site related is less than great.
But I'm having an issue with members asking me questions , in my Profile Comments ; and if ( unlike today ) I don't see the alert that day , that there has been a Profile Comment , the alert disappears in what would appear to be a very short period of time .
I would ask , Is there a way to close Profile Comments and redirect these questions to Private Messages , or have notifications of Profile Comments e mailed to me the way Private Messages do.
Failing either of those options , at least have the alert to a Profile Comment remain in my User CP until I've read it .
I know that perhaps I should check Profile Comments often , but I would think there has to be a way to get the alert to stay in place until I deal with it.
I'll offer apologies to those members , who have asked me questions and received no replies ; honest I don't mean to seem like I'm ignoring you I just don't see your questions in a timely manner, and sending a reply months after the fact just doesn't seem appropriate.
If you do have question and believe I can help , please use the Private Message option , for the quickest reply.

Many forums don’t even use profile comments, and I think it is confusing. I’ve used the Profile Comment box here thinking I was sending a PM, and almost did it a second time even after I realized I’d used the wrong method of communication the first time..

For the reasons you have cited, Profile Comments are pretty much worthless for questions & answers. I wouldn't worry about it. If you notice you have received one, I suggest replying with a standard message like "Please use Private Messages for this purpose" and let the sender fix the problem if he is still interested.

Gary , any way to approach the site administrators , for a modification to eliminate , Profile Comments as a contact option .
Or adding , View Profile Comments , to the User CP , so you don't have to go looking for them in , Quick Links .

I agree with Skip426. I have never, ever thought to check my own profile for comments. Seems strange and useless when PMs are available. I think the feature should be discontinued.

I sometimes get questions when someone 'Thanks' me. Unfortunately, I don't read the 'Thanks' every time I'm on this site so I don't see them in a timely matter. Thanks to all for the 'Thanks'!!

Skip426, go to your "user CP", then click on profile privacy. There you have the option ot restrict profile comments ranging from everyone to only friends.

Ray gave the correct answer. Mgmt isn't going to do anything to tweak the software. We're on the schedule for new software at some point, TBD, in the future. Using resources to make programming changes to vB is not the best use of our tech's time.

Lori, we've been teased with "new forum software" for as long as I've been here (almost 5 years). I know Janet has been involved with it for much longer.
Are we closer than we were?

You know as much as I do. All we can do is wait for that TBD date.

It would be nice to see some 21st century forum software.
VBulletin is so outdated. It was great 20 years ago, but there are much better.
One example is XenForo. Very customizable and interactive. Has a great notification system as well.
10 fold better than VBulletin.

Thanks Ray.
Just in the last few days messages have been showing up in my profile. Very strange indeed. Don't know what changed but I will check the settings as suggested.

I'm guessing many members don't understand the difference between posting, blogging, private messaging & profile comments as well as how to correctly respond to each of them. That appears to be the case with the recent profile comments you see today.

But you can't restrict them from everyone.
