I was compiling a private message (on an iPad) and may have touched the wrong thing on the screen and the massage disappeared. The system tells me it is saved, but I don’t know where and I don’t know how to get it back. When I pull down the menu on the top right corner (. . .) it lists only New Message, not saved ones. Any advice?

Click on the “Private messages” link in the upper right corner by your log in name. When the page appears, look at the choices down the left side of the page, and scroll down to the “Private messages” section. There are some choices there that may work, including “list messages,” and “track messages.”

I've not encountered this before either. I see only an Inbox & a Sent folder. Can you provide a screenshot of where it tells you it's saved?
