Other forums that I am a member of have a size restriction for avtars. The forum software will not allow a member to attach an avtar that is larger than X KB. The performance of this site is probably the worst of any that I visit, and this issue is probably one of the causes.

I really hope this avatar issue gets resolved soon. We were camping most of last week with only a cell phone connection. After the first night I had to give up accessing the forum and just wait for the daily digests.
My plea on the Florida Forum apparently fell on deaf ears as the ones who upload a large picture are usually on broadband and don't even know they're creating a problem for some of the rest of us.
My vote would be to kill the avatars until the problem can be resolved or each user can specify whether he or she wants the avatar displayed or not.

I would think the moderators/administrators have the ability to remove large pictures, whether they are avatars, in the body of a message, or in a signature.
There is a workaround in Internet Explorer. Unfortunately, it blocks all pictures and icons, but your download speed will increase.
At the top of the Internet Explorer screen, click on Tools, Internet Options, Advanced Tab, then scroll down to Multimedia, and uncheck the Show pictures box. Click on Apply, then OK.

Here's another example: Size is 21K, and can be resized to 2K.

possible solution i found:
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content"> There is a way you can allow your users to do this. It's not the simplest, but it is possible.
This is how to do it in IE:
create a new file in notepad, name it style.css
add the following line to the file:
.ev_ubbx_tpc_avatar {display:none}
save somewhere on your computer.
now in IE go up to tools > internet options > click the Accessabilty button > on the next screen click "user style sheet" and browse for the file you just created.
that should work.
Note, some of the images you find here are custom html and not avatars, so they will still display.
</div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Scott: Interesting solution.
Question. Does this only prevent the display of the avtars, or does it prevent them from being downloaded. If they still have to be downloaded, but are not displayed, then nothing is gained for our purposes here.

Since this subject has come up again, I'm going to bump this back to the top. The issue has never been resolved and makes visiting this forum using a cell phone connection too slow to be of any value. I am not aware of any other forum software that allows large avtar files.
