I rented a car from an "off airport" rental agency out of Orlando.. They tried to pull that crap... while there was no direct mention of this on their website rules, they expected to do the same if I couldn't provide a proof of insurance certificate.. Luckily, I have one saved on my phone electronically.. I emailed it to them and there was no $1000 deposit taken..
I can assure you.. if they tried, I would have asked for a ride back to the airport and I would have found just as good of a deal somewhere.. that, I can assure you !!

Wasn't it Ben Franklin who said that?

Sure.... They started putting scales for both kilometers and miles on American cars in the 70's. Supposedly this would get us accustomed to metric so the conversion would be easier. Many people never see the numbers representing kilometers on their speedometers, and might even argue that they're not on there.
After reading my comment above, I wonder how many people went out to their garage to see if their car actually has kilometers on the speedometer.

I rented a car in Orlando for literally $5 a day plus tax. I paid extra for the midsize [emoji57]it was one of the better known budget brands...Budget or Dollar or some such.
No issues, just really cheap.
Now off brand car rental some place like the Cayman Islands? That can be an adventure...

We still use miles for car travel, feet for heights of people, stones for weights of people and pints for milk and beer.
Just about everything else is metric.

Sounds like click bait to me, even tho it worked out luckily to his advantage.....

Crazy Florida car rental experience I had was back in 2010. I rented a car from Budget at Orlando Airport. We had the car( silver Camry) 4 days, returned it and flew back home to NY.
A week later I get a call from my insurance company wanting the details of how I damaged the rental car. I'm asking what damage and the agent is saying Budget is claiming right front fender and passenger door was damaged. I told him the car wasn't damaged when I returned it. He sends me a picture from Budget, I'm saying no-way was that damage there when I returned it. This goes back and forth for another couple of days. Then my insurance company(Liberty Mutual) sends their adjuster out to physically look at the car. He checks all the claim information and finds the VIN doesn't match the claim. He goes back to Budget and they soon discover the plates had been switched from another silver Camry. No explanation or apology from Budget. They just dropped the claim. That pissed off my wife who wrote the CEO (Ron Nelson) of Budget. A couple weeks after she wrote we got a letter of apology along with a refund of the rental and a $250 voucher for a future rental.
But what still bugs me is who switched the plates was it a customer or someone at Budget? When you rented or returned a car at that time they scanned a bar code at the bottom left corner of the windshield. I could see someone swapping plates with an identical car. but how would it get pass the scanner when the car was returned?
