Most smaller gel cells like this are spec'd down to the 1 hour rate and will come in at nominally 1/2 the 20C capacity depending on what the voltage cutoff spec is. They are also spec'd well above the rated capacity for peak currents. So this little battery could source 40 or 50A (for some number of seconds) if you need it to. Something like the weed whacker here could be drawing 5 amps plus at 24V (~1/6 HP) which would bring the battery down in half an hour but that might be all the operating time you need out of it. Before the advent of low impedance and relatively inexpensive lithium batteries, lead acid and nicad/NiMH were the only games in town for power tools and they got thrashed mercilessly in that service. Abusing the batteries and shortening their lives was an acceptable tradeoff to the utility the tools provided. If one really wanted to, a retrofit lithium battery could be fabricated for this unit that would be double the capacity and half the weight. Most folks just buy a new tool with a new battery but I have a hard time throwing away working tools, so I keep cobbling together battery packs and running them as long as they'll go.

Given my lack of knowledge on this subject... Retrofitting is not an option.

Since I last posted... I heard back from Sears/Craftsman providing me a link to the replacement battery for my specific line-trimmer (Craftsman WeedWacker 240.74805): https://www.osibatteries.com/p-28592...-required.aspx

I get the not "throwing away". I have had this unit for 25-years. Over the years, for various reasons, I have tried line-trimmer that just did not do it for me.

Replacement batteries always worked in the past. So this situation is confusing.

What do you think about the charger being a possible issue?

12-volt 7.5-amp / 9.5-amp?

I was chatting with another merchant... And they recommend the below. Do these seem like a better solution?

There are any number of sources for those kinds of batteries. The brand and part number would not make a difference if you're not properly charging it in the first place.

I've given up on all of them. Corded, gas or battery they all suck in my opinion. Between the motors burning out, engines not starting, endless messing with the string hubs and dealing with batteries there's not enough trimming what passes for grass in my climate worth the bother. I sold my pile of derelict trimmers at a yard sale and to he11 with all of them.

Maybe you ended up with a couple stinkers? There's ways to test them if you want. Though in my experience even "bad" batteries will usually exhibit normal terminal voltage after charging.

Going strictly by the photos in your first post, your "charged" voltage is nearly dead. So whether that's a bad battery, bad charger or bad connection between the two is what you get to resolve next. Using that same voltmeter see what the voltage is coming out of the charger and also directly on the batteries. Leave it on overnight and the next day it should be at least 13.8V, possibly higher. Once you know this you can then further narrow down the issue you're having.

That's a different size battery, 7Ah. It won't fit.

Full-refund on Batteries - Waiting on Charger

Update: I'm receiving a full-refund on the batteries; Do not need to return them.

I'll try charging them with the new charger when it arrives.

Stay tuned!

The resolution to this dilemma was… The power-supply!
