A nice way to spend an afternoon winter camping
DW and I spent much of yesterday watching out the window as ice fishermen tried to set up their shelters on the ice. The winds were in double digits all day and we shamelessly enjoyed watching tent after tent being blown across the ice with a fisherman or two in hot pursuit. Later arrivals seemed to learn from the mistakes of others and staked down the corners of their shelters before erecting their tents and stepping out of them.
It was also fun to watch as a Great Blue Heron almost stole a fish from a fisherman who had left the fish on the ice and was walking toward his wife on the shore. The heron was running as fast as he could from about 30 yards away but the DW yelled at her DH soon enough for him to turn around and charge at the heron waving him off. Several herons spent the rest of the afternoon surrounding his fishing hole in case they saw an opening.
This afternoon is sunny and warm in the low 40s so lots of folks are on the ice in lawn chairs with no tents in sight. A large group just in front of us have started throwing trout they have caught further out on the ice and a bald eagle has been swooping down out of the trees and snatching the fish up about 50 yards from us. A Great Blue Heron is also participating in the food fest.
The best camera I have is on my cellphone. I got a short video and a still but I haven't figured out a way to post the video. We are at St. Vrain State Park in Longmont, CO. It has a number of ponds from small to large which are home to the herons, pelicans, hawks and eagles. I've read about but haven't yet seen any swans.

If you don't need a cooler to keep the beer cold, it's too cold to fish.

winter camping
Brother and i ice fish as much as we can..he has a tent.but we prefer to sit beside his pickup and watch all the people comimg on the lake.
last January we watched a guy move the big yellow gate that said.NO VEHICLES ice not safe yet.. he parked about 50 ft farther on lake than us.no sooner did he stop and both doors opened and the two Morons jumped out and down went there 2 week oldd Ford diesal pickup.out of sight it went and all the fishing crap they had in the box floated to the top..the one Moron ran over and said ,trucks only 2 weeks old!
we found put out his insurance paid for recovery in May,but not the truck..he had a big winch truck and a diver recover it, took it to friends auto body shop where they removed interior and dryed it out, then took to Ford dealer to drain all water and get running. hes driving it today.
you cant fix stupid..

Grew up ice fishing in Northern Wisconsin. Didn't matter the weather, cold wasn't a problem, snowing or not we'd be on the lakes all winter.
We'd drive on the ice, early in the season we'd have the windows open, never know when there would be thin ice. We drove by vehicles that had dropped through.
