When I was 18 years old I had a wreck which was clearly my fault. I owned up to it, made no excuses, and promised to pay for damages. The car was torn up pretty bad. He said that was fine, and he didn't even call the police. A few days later he came by my home with an estimate that was well below what I expected. I told him that was less than I expected, and he said that was just for the additional damage I'd caused. He'd had another wreck a few days earlier that caused most the damage.

At that early age he made quite an impression. I was so shocked I didn't know how to thank him properly or didn't feel like I did. But he was grinning so big I think he got the message. Helluva a nice guy.

Great respect for a person like that. A couple of years ago, I got a call from a guy that claimed my son backed into his truck and just left. He wanted $500 right away or else. I asked how he knew that's what the repair would cost and he started stumbling. Red flag. For ta week I asked every day to meet him so I could see his truck. Guy never agreed to let me see it and eventually disappeared.

You have a decent neighbor.

I just wish someone owned up to destroying a bumper on a show level car I owned a few years back

You know who the strong people are, when in situations like those described above, they step up to the plate.

Sounds like he should have used the G>O>A>L> principal when he was backing into the shaded area. Get out and look. I know exactly what you mean, because I store my boat, and my rv in a storage barn. On a sunny day, you cant see anything past the doors backing into the dark barn. I will get out six times if I have to. Better yet, bring a competent spotter.
