Canada Alcohol prices?
Guys,
I thought y’all were my friends here. I have posted several questions about traveling in Canada, crossing the border, ferries and such. But no one chimed in to tell me that I would have to sell my toad here to pay for the liquor, beer and wine. OMG. These prices are insane. I had no idea that Canada used the money from the sales to help fund their health care. I will say that the roads have been very nice, not like California, and the park in Banff is a 10. Nobody tell the USA to tax alcohol at this rate. I will go broke.
Cheers!
JJ

And that is why we spend the winter in AZ. We can afford beer and wine there.

That's why we go to Montana for beer runs. Way cheaper even with the exchange and duty.

Only advantage is the current exchange rate, back in 2012 we were at par and the prices were high then.

Funny story. A former boss of mine took his girlfriend to Niagra Falls for a long weekend.
While there, they decided to cross over into Canada for lunch.
He asked for a beer for lunch, and the server asked "Domestic or import?".
Without thinking, he asked for a domestic and was shocked when they brought him a Molson's!
Not quite the Bud Light he was expecting!

I think it does matter what you choose to drink. We drink "higher quality" box wines which we can buy for ~$18/3 liter box in most parts of the US (higher in some areas). That's $6/liter.
A couple of years ago we spent the entire summer on Prince Edward Island where the "high quality" box wine cost ~$45/4 liters. That's $11.25/liter which sound high, but, at the time, the exchange rate was $1 (US) ~ $1.3 (CDN). If you account for the exchange rate the cost of the Canadian wine is $8.65/liter. So the Canadian wine was 44% higher. At our rate of consumption of ~1 liter/day, that amounted to ~$238 (US) over the 90 days we spent on PEI, small compared to the total cost of the vacation.
IMHO that didn't justify not going to Canada nor did it justify going back across the border to buy in the US. Vacations cost money; if you're not prepared to spend what it costs, don't bother to go. JMO

That's why our health care is FREE, you should see paychecks after the government takes their piece.

We had two occasions to buy wine in Canada. on the eastern seaboard, asmall bottle of wine cost $15 that only costs $5 in the US. A later trip out west we found a larger bottle of wine for $29 which you can get in the US for around $10. It did discourage casual drinking of wine.

I still figure we are way ahead of the game. Decent hotels here in Banff are 200-300 and up per night. We are paying 38.00 for a beautiful full hook up site and have our home with us. Love RVing.

Things are a lot less expensive when traveling in another country if you buy local products rather than imported. The wine example I provided in a previous post was based on buying Canadian-produced wine, not buying a US wine.

This is why you find a lot of Canadians drinking in American bars near the border!
