Helps relieve swelling in my knee. Also use it on bad shoulder when it gets too painful. Not a cure all but it does help me. I get mine on Amazon. 99.995% Pharma Grade.99.995% Pharma Grade

Dimethyl sulfoxide. I want to say it was originally developed as a solvent but is also used as an anti-inflammatory agent in veterinary medicine as a horse liniment. The only FDA approved use in humans that I know of is the installation in the bladder for an inflammatory condition known as interstitial cystitis. Because of the anti-inflammatory properties, some people use it on themselves for joint pain but the last I heard it still hasn't been FDA approved for use in humans.

Industrial-grade solvent. Most of its medical properties arise from its ability to pass through cell membranes and carry things with it as it goes (which, if you think about it, is kind of a double-edged sword.)

It's one of those compounds about which you'll hear very disparate opinions, usually strongly held.

I've used it off and on for my knees. Seemed to be similar in effect to taking a couple Ibuprofen, but I am fully aware it could all be the placebo effect. For short time it was all the rage as a cure all - in the late 70s early 80s? you could buy it over the counter, then it was pulled because people started drinking it, and injecting it. Like so many other alternative cures, there are no standards or regulations governing it's manufacturing or use. It is a byproduct of the wood pulp industry. As mentioned above, one of it's properties is the ability to pass through tissues and into the bloodstream. Some studies showed it had anti inflammatory properties. The problem with this ability to penetrate tissues is it could carry any contaminants or toxins with it. In fact, it was experimented with as a possible carrier for medication. Supposedly one of the way you could tell if you were using the real stuff was, within moments of topical application, you'd get a mild taste of oily garlic in your mouth. I noticed the effect on some I had purchased.

Besides being able to purchase it online, a lot of farm and garden stores carry it in their horse product sections. That where I got mine. The only side effect I noticed was a sudden craving for alfalfa.

If you are considering using it, please remember you could be buying anything. Doesn't matter what they call it or if they claim it's "medical grade" because sits in the unregulated alternative medicine world where tap water cures cancer, and sugar pills reverse aging.

I used it some 15-20 years ago to help with painful muscles caused by stress. (I no longer have that stressful career. . . .) I found it quite helpful, and might try it again for old-age muscle and joint pains. I did notice it excreted, to some extent, as I exhaled, giving my breath a slight garlic odor.

I was blown away by the title of this thread. DMSO was used as a solvent for NMR spectroscopy when I was a Chemistry student back in the 1970's. Would have never guessed that it would be injected into living tissue. Live & Learn.
