Ever wondered what became of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well-educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.
Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.

and to those who seem to hate America and for what we stand for just imagine what the world would look like had America never existed. it would be a very, very dark place.

Button Gwinnet was a British nationalist and the at the time was Governor of Georgia. He signed it and was declared a traitor. Ironically he was killed by an American in a dual a couple of years later. His killer, the challenger for Governor's office.

A number of the Generals for the Patriots, though not signers of the Declaration, gave all the wealth they had to support the war effort and the troops under their command. Some never lived to recover from their debts or really live long enough to enjoy the freedoms they gave everything to procure. Lafayette directly ignored the order of his French king and paid for ships and supplies for the war effort from his own fortune, not to mention being directly involved and putting his own life in danger. And we should never forget the men and women who gave all they had, but were not of a stature to ever be recognized in the history books.

When I think of what these people have given for the rest of us, it's hard to have words to describe my appreciation. It's too bad that much of our education system, and frankly most parents, does such a poor job of instilling patriotism and appreciation of history in our students these days so they can appreciate what it took to give them what they now take for granted.

AWESOME...never knew that...back then many men were men...24 out of the 56 were lawyers... now that a switch from today’s lawyers...they actually knew full well what they were doing and fighting for back then...

1776 is one of my favorite time periods in history...actually I live 20-25 minutes from “William Floyd” one of the signers visited his estate which I believe in a Federal monument of sorts...also there is another popular series on Netflix called “Turn: Washington's Spies” which also happened on Long Island, New York...visited those places too in Setauket, New York check out the link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Setauk...uket,_New_York

Thank you for the info and insights. We have tried to visit the homes of our founding fathers, our history from that period is fascinating.
