At 10 I got a paper route for a local "newspaper" that paid about $0.015 per delivered paper. I dropped one at every house on my route for a total of 300 papers. This was a once a week paper.

When I turned 12, I upgraded to a paper route for the Detroit News. One sales competition for them won me a free 3 day trip to Washington DC. That was my first trip by plane. I still feel sorry for the chaperones, not easy keeping tabs on 70 teenage boys. Someone found a place to buy fireworks and were throwing them out of their hotel window!

At 16 I got a job at a local restaurant where I ended up doing just about every job except manager and owner, janitor, soda fountain, cook, dishwasher, waiter....

Started at 13 or 14 working for local dairy farmer (@32 Head) shoveling trenches for $2/hr. Soon added loading/unloading hay wagons (from field to loft) with no raise in pay until I graduated HS and went into USCG.
