Had my Gallbladder removed in Dec 2000...3 band-aid size incisions
Yes...arthroscopic surgery in 2000
Doc did tell me I could wake up with a 'fish mouth' if needed to get gallbladder removed.

So what is considered the 'old days'

As for the VA 'myhealthevet' website.
I use it ALL the time
Order Rx refills.....3-4 day delivery via mail
Send secure messages to my local VA Clinic.....responses typically within 3 days tops
Download/print Labs, Doctors reports, medical records etc.

YOU should contact the VA and upgrade your account to "PREMIUM"
Allows you do do alot more securely
https://www.myhealth.va.gov/mhv-port...authentication

One thing I have learned when using the VA Medical....you 'the patient' MUST be proactive
I have gotten very good service/treatment from VA by being proactive.

Actually I am already enrolled as a premium member. DW was able to fiddle with the website and finally get the report printed I wanted. She was using less than lady language by the end of it but we did get what I wanted. I then took it downtown to a local doc I can actually talk to. He agrees, not anything more needed at this time but if my symptoms change then we chase it and get to the bottom of it. Thank you medicare.

I agree the VA portal offers a lot of good stuff, but I am still happier going downtown and seeing a real person and not having to wait months and feel like I am pulling teeth to get info. That being said, most specialists I have seen at the VA once you actually get in to see them, do a very good job as do the specialty technicians. It is just the interface with the providers and the patient and the complexity of getting things done that has driven me away from the VA and towards medicare.

Glad to hear you got the report and second opinion from a Doctor vs some doc's nurse
*Nurses are backbone and I truly appreciate them BUT I want Doc to explain things not second hand interpretation

Thanks for the update!

I think that refers to the days when the incision in your side was 8" long & required a few days stay in the hospital. It's still done but only in extreme, emergency situations where the laparoscopic way can't be done.

Since mine had to be removed right when all this COVID crap was taking off (end of April), I opted for a stand alone surgery center rather than a hospital for the procedure. No chance of COVID infection & the cost was 1/3 of what it would've been in the hospital. Yes, it was covered by my insurance, but no sense in it costing what it does at a hospital.

Rowachol is available in the USA. It's made in Germany. Worked great for an acquaintance.

Don't put it off too long, I had major gallbladder surgery with complications in 2011, short story got diagnosed in May, they wanted to go in and do ERCP to clean out bile duct before surgery, found a stricture, more test, more referrals to specialist, etc. July get to see specialist surgeon, he does a CAT scan finds the infections in the gallbladder is eroding into the liver, put me in hospital that night on IV antibiotics, drain put in next morning, 7 days in the hospital on IV antibiotics, and major 7 hour surgery 2 weeks later to remove gallbladder, and bile duct, and reroute stuff.

Debbie could not sleep a Friday night in 2012. Saturday morning she says we need to go to the emergency room. Sunday morning at 6:00 out her Gal Bladder came.

No previous problems.

Ironically, my wife just had her gall bladder removed yesterday. I would strongly recommend not getting medical advice from an RV forum. All the best.

Mine hurt for months before chronic diarrhea and nausea drove me to the ED one early morning. Ultrasound said I was full of BB size gall stones and sludge. Came out 4 days later. Took it easy for 2 weeks but still haven't been able to eat any foods considered high fat... like bacon..... Let me correct myself... I can eat all the bacon I can stand, and then have a cleansing effect as my liver releases enough bile to drown me....

Ironically mine did not start hurting until 3-4 day before my referral to the specialty liver surgeon, 2-3 months after my initial diagnoses, and after an MRCP, an ERCP to clear out stones from the bile duct, and a Spyglass ERCP to insert a stint in the bile duct due to the stricture that was sound in the first ERCP. As to scars, mine is about 11-12 inches long and vaguely S shaped. (lookup Roux en-Y hepaticojejunostomy procedure) Not fun, removed gallbladder, bile duct, sphincter of odi, rerouted a section of intestine to make a new bile duct, just without any bile flow control, 6 days in the hospital to recover from the surgery, lots of dietary limitations afterward while I slowly re-adapted to what I could eat. 6 weeks post surgery and Club crackers were too greasy for me to digest without stomach issues. 6 months post surgery I had my first cheeseburger, and was up all night with nausea and indigestion.
