Do you really think that panhandler would be on that street corner begging if they could actually hold a job. And the dog surely didn’t do anything wrong. I often give them a buck or two while thanking God I don’t have to walk in those shoes.

Pay it forward.
"Dog/smoking" They got ya there OB!
I have a conundrum. I had an uncle that would always look around the restaurant for anyone or an older couple that were having a meal that looked like they could use a hand up. He would then ask the cashier to let him pay for their meal. I try to do that now as well. So how do I know how much to tip then? I always ask that they never get to know who paid for them.
Here in Canada it's called "Paying it Forward". Lots of times it starts at a Tim Horton's drive through. I think the record is somewhere around 228 people in a row paying for the order for the person behind them.

Personally, I wish the whole tipping culture thing here in the US would just die. Pay restaurant staff a decent living wage like the rest of the world does and call it a day. Somehow the rest of world makes it work. Why can't it here?
It won't happen in my lifetime though.

With businesses begging for employees now I don't really think MOST of them want to work! JMHO

Simple. If he can afford to smoke today and feed his dog, he don't need the money.

10% if mediocre service.
15% if average service.
20% if good service.
Whatever feels right if excellent service, PLUS a verbal 'nice job' to go with it.
A friend and I go out regularly, he doesn't drink, so I never drink when just he and I are out - we both have water. If the server keeps glasses of water coming just like they would a 'real' drink, plus make sure the meal is OK, then when it comes time to pay I'll give extra on the tip. After all, it's not their fault we had water and therefore there isn't any additional cost on the check. In those cases I've easily crossed 50%, because I do a rough calculation on what we would have spent on drinks, and then tip based the total amount including drinks. And yes, I worked in restaurants for many years, I think that makes a difference.

Try it for a few hours and then say it isn’t “work”. Most of those panhandlers have issues that preclude them from employment of any kind. It would be great if there was some magic solution to the homeless, mentally ill and addicted people, but there isn’t. So I try and show some compassion, since I have been blessed with both mental and physical health.

YES........dang near every place around has a 'Help Wanted' sign
And many of those 'so called' down/out panhandlers at end of day go get in a nice car and go home at end of shift
Seen it/witnessed it
There are down n out.......who choose that lifestyle
There are down n out ...who do not want to work
And there are those that could use a helping hand.....but refuse services available
I have no problem lending a helping hand......but not hands outs over and over and over
$14 a pack for cigarettes....pack a day???

We do same here from Alberta. Look for folks counting their pennies before ordering or end up sharing a very small amount, then discretely ask server to let us pay their bill anonymously. We tip well for exceptional service and until the demise of our penny, would leave only one if the service/food was absolutely awful and they hadn't offered to comp when commented on.
Like some others being from the UK originally, where when we left even a nominal tip it was alien there, we struggle with the tipping expectations and especially when added to bill automatically. We feel strongly everyone should be paid a fair wage for a fair day's work, and any tipping is because "we as a consumer/customer" want to do so not feel obligated to do so. We noticed service and food quality started going downhill many years ago, and hardly now (maybe once every one or two months) go out to eat anymore, except one place where we know a specific server will take care of us.

Depends.
Friends of mine in college were waiters, and I learned a lot form them. How they lived on tips, and how to treat customers to get better tips.
When at restaurants we generally do 15%, occasionally 20%. My I go to my hair-stylist (who gives me a long-term-customer rate) I tip around 170%. He charges me $35, new customer are charged $60. I pay him $60, as I appreciate his service, and time.
Now when it comes to airports, I carry my own bags, and I do not use taxis. So I do not tip here. RVTravel.com today had an article on tipping campground personal. Had not though about it, but it made me think. I have only once had someone lead me to a camp site, and never though about tipping. I might change my ideas here, in the future.

If you tip on the taxed amount, and most of us do, wouldn't that be 20% of the 7% tax or something like 1.4% extra. I don't believe it will add up to 7%.

What about it? I have no problem tipping if appropriate, but I'm certainly not going to just cause there's a space that needs to be filled in. Try this- put a line through it! We tip 20% most of the time. Even if the food is crappy, it's usually not the server's fault.
