I wonder if that is why I get so many hang up calls. Folks listening to me think a whole lot younger than what my Driver's license says. So when the scammer hears my voice.. He hangs up..

Of course, When it comes to sounding young, I have nothing on Dr. Kevorken (Did I spell that right, he was once called Dr. Death because of his assisting suicides) he sounded like perhaps 25-30 when I last spoke with him... (For the record he called me,, My phone number at the time was 9-1-1)

You can always Google the Phone Number (if you have caller I D) and you would be suprised at what info you'll get.

taxman, I'm glad to know these recent events are documented scams, but by your generalized statement above it is clear you have far more confidence and trust in the IRS than I have learned to have.

John, it is not really a matter of trust or confidence, but rather a knowledge of procedures. There are certain procedures the IRS is required to follow and not making random phone calls or sending e-mails is very, very high on that list.

The new crop of agents they have hired have been the most poorly trained and inadequately educated of any I have ever seen and I have been practicing for over 35 years. They are, however, well indoctrinated in the procedures that need to be followed and they tend to follow those procedures to the letter. Sometimes their procedural loyalty can be a royal pain, but that's just how they function.

Ed

I agree with wnytaxman. My dealings with the IRS (last 5 years) are they are rich in procedures (brain dead) and poor in common sense. If it is not in their script, they "tilt" and the scenario becomes dog chasing tail.

I have no doubt there are official procedures formulated. I can also assure you with rock-solid certainty that they have not always followed them.

Haven't had a call from IRS (yet). But if I do, I'll tell them I'll pay them just as soon as I get my money from the Benin Republic.

My DW, listened to our answering machine the other day, said they were the IRS. Left a message that we "DO NOT IGNORE THIS CALL"! They then gave us the number to call back. I ignored it a few days and then decided to see what they had to say. I got a message that the number "was not a working number". That suited me fine. Never heard from them again!

If you are curious it is better to look the number up using google. There are some telephone marketing companies that will call you and hang up or leave a message like the one you received. If you call back then they will continue to blast you with calls. Technically you have called them therefore you wish to receive their calls.

I got one a long time ago that might actually have been the IRS looking for my mother who had been dead for a few years. Hung up on them. I had already returned many letters and nicely told them my mom is deceased and I am not and never had been responsible for her bills or taxes. The only reason they had my address was I changed hers to out house when she went into a nursing home so we could pay her bills, from her bank account.

I'm still not sure if it was a scam or really the IRS but don't think if she had a refund coming they would be bothering me. The real IRS must have given up on the letters after I marked them all "deceased not at this address". I was going to just change her address to the cemetery but didn't think they would find that funny.

No wonder they were calling with a address like that Mark!
Typo, I know, couldn't resist myself
