A local senior citizen here got a call telling him they found a problem with his computer and requesting access to it. They locked up his computer and said they would release it for (IIRC) $800. He refused and tried to get it released by a couple different repair facilities, the last I heard no one could help him.

The ex secretaru where I work had her PC locked up. They called and she ended up paying about $135 for one year "protection" although they offered her a permanent solution (for more money). Haven't found out if it's returned yet.
