I think I was about 60 when we splurged on our first jug of the real stuff. Haven't touched a drop of the fake stuff since. I'm 79 now. Since it tends to be a bit seasonal we keep a couple months supply on hand.
We buy honey only at farmer's markets. In bottles that clearly have a label applied by the farmer.

My daughter married a guy whose dad cut the wood, collected the sap and boiled it out in his shack. When I'm around I help him maintain watch.. Boiling it down. Keeping the fire going.. Sitting by the fire roasting hot dogs and petting his dog out in the woods of rural Minnesota.
Needless to say, our grandchildren are forever spoiled and won't touch the other stuff.

On a trip to New England many years ago we went to a small farm where they had a crew of about five people bottling Maple Syrup.
Bought several bottles....the real stuff is wonderful!

Nothing like REAL maple syrup. The stuff with artificial flavoring should be banned.

Growing up in Northern NY I worked at several sugar bushes in the season. Nothing like breaking open a couple fresh eggs and poaching them on top of the boiling sap in the evaporator. I stoked many a fire in these shacks, drawing sap to the shacks and cleaning equipment making one dollar per hour.

Hwy 9 between Brattleboro and Bennington. Several outlets for distilleries and a very pleasant drive. In Brookfield Nh someone comes along and taps all the maple trees along the road every year, and a friend there distills about 50 gal/year. Quite the cottage industry. Having had no shortage of the stuff for many years I can’t imagine using imitation.
Also my Aunt always had the real stuff from Canada when I was a kid so I was “value programmed” at an early age. That and cracked crab, San Francisco sour dough, home grown veggies, and Dryers ice cream, and quite a few other favorites.
Every time I visit New England, which used to be every year but we didn’t go in 2020, I pick up a dozen or so bottles of various sizes, styles, and distillers for Christmas presents. Always a hit.

I grew up in New England and never realized there was fake stuff until my mother-in-law had it around. I banned anything but the real thing in our house. And back to childhood, there’s nothing like maple syrup over fresh snow! Also, agree about the honey.
