Odd question from a manager calling to ask if I wanted a Interview?

So I had a manager of a large corporation call me wanting to set up a interview, But his first few words were a little different then I have had in the past, He basically first came out and said on the phone. “Not sure if you are actually serious about this job or just testing the waters” I am definitely very interested in this job which I explained to him. But I am not sure how to take why he said that or said it right away? I guess if I was under qualified for it he maybe wouldn’t of said it? Any suggestions?

In todays environment it could be called "trolling in jobs". Do a little online research and you'll discover what this means. Just relay your serious intentions to break the ice.

Doesn't sound like the way any large corporation I've dealt with these days does interviews. They have pretty rigid HR guidelines for contacting prospective hires to avoid lawsuits. I'm assuming this is a position you applied for, not some cold call out of nowhere?

Perhaps the job doesn't pay as much as you are used to making. Also, and a bit late now, but there would have been no harm in asking at the end of the call.

In any case, I would ask how much vacation time you get and if you can take it right after getting hired as you need to go RVing for a few weeks.

It was the manager of a large oil and gas plant but the company itself is very large, wasn’t a HR representative. And I did apply online for it,

Do you have a background in 'oil/gas plant'?

Does your job history show steady work or multiple jobs?

Does you previous position 'conform' with the job requirements etc?

See.....looking at you application the answers to those questions would make me evaluate your intentions and maybe cause me to ask that same question "are you serious or testing the waters"

Interviews are costly/time consuming

I wouldn't have thought twice about that question
I would have answered and asked WHEN is my Interview??

From what friends who own or manage businesses tell me, he is probably tired of wasted time from people who are either fulfilling a requirement so they can keep their unemployment or who think they should be running the place a couple of days after hire. I’d guess your reassurance that you actually want the position sure won’t hurt your chances.

Most of my career has been in the oil field so yes, and I have never had a non work period in my career or resume I sent and only have had 2 different jobs of a career of 11 years so not multiple jobs, That’s the part I was confused about is there is nothing that shows I wouldn’t be serious or just going to quit right away on them,

I would bet that he is trying to screen against those applying just to maintain jobless benefits. Every manager has run into that, and it's probably worse now due to current circumstances. If you indicated an earnest interest in the position then that's probably all he was looking for and I wouldn't worry about it any further.

I had my last job interview in 1976. Guess I can't provide any insight.

This.

I have a relative in construction. He says about 2/3rds of applicants are mostly interested in proving they're "actively seeking employment."

Oil Field....

I was a Derrick Hand on oil rigs but that wouldn't have much in common with an 'oil/gas plant' although I worked both oil & gas drilling sites

Point is....did you get an interview scheduled?
As suggested......means of weeding out those that are 'just looking' vs those that are wanting a job

Then the managers question was a non-issue

Good luck on the Interview.
Hope you get the job!
