Our new gopher control program

https://drive.google.com/file/d/16xT...5MeNL9nxg/view

This was in the back yard this morning. I shot stills the first time then this video as the bird was cooperating. Sorry for the poor technique and focus noise. Video isnít my thing and a dslr isnít the best thing to shoot it with. But there are some good captures here; a little over one minute viewing time.

That's what we call a Blue John. They are plentiful here. They like to hang around water like other Herons.
The correct name is Great Blue Heron.

I had one recently rob all my fishing minnows out of a 5-gallon bucket that was sitting in my boathouse.
They like my boathouse, them and the giant white cranes. I've got a Ring camera down there and I have them on cam often.

They will eat anything that they can catch.

We have a large pasture directly behind our house.......Blue Herons land out there all the time.
We have gophers and NOT ONCE have thpse Blue Herons helped &$&$*#

Neighbor across the street has a pond in front yard with some Koi .....Blue Heron has been fishing and she caught it one morning with a Koi speared.
Fishing is easier then battling a gopher ........

I used to work in a building overlooking a pond. One day one of the interior designers came running in saying, "there's a pterdactyl(sp) in the pond!" Turned out a heron (or similar) bird was wading in the shallow area...
(yeah, I know that's an obsolete name and it's really 'pteradon', but that's what she said...)

Good pics! Herons are proof that dinosaurs live.

Somewhere I have a picture of 26 herons roosting in a tree above an estuary north of Sitka. It's very Jurassic looking with the Spanish moss, huge ferns and spruce trees. Herons gather there in huge numbers when the fingerling salmon swim downstream to the ocean.

Down here I see dozens at a time in pastures. I assume they're eating anything smaller than themselves -- bugs, frogs, baby birds, mice. But I can't get close enough for my camera.

They are pretty shy. I’d been chasing this guy around for about a week (since he arrived in the area) and finally he came to me. Even so I shot this with a 500mm lens. No tripod handy and no time to set one up so I shot the stills hand-held, and sat backwards on a chair on my back porch and rested the camera on the back of the chair for the video. Otherwise the video would have been pretty bad trying to hold that much camera steady for that long.

Some earlier shots:

I bought an old “similar item” for the same purpose. Less likely to mess up the sprinkler system than something bigger.

Anecdotally, we had a huge outbreak of voles at a new fire station. Totally destroying a whole bunch of over priced landscaping. So rather than deal with, and wait for city employees and administrators to form a committee and do everything but solve the problem, I went to HD, bought a bunch of decon and baited the whole area while the engine and truck companies were out. So problem solved under the radar. Then I get a phone call: uh Chief, we got a bunch of dead jack rabbits around the station. I said “huh. Call building maintenance”.

Careful with the firearms references posts. You all know that's a no-no here. Only discuss varmit control that doesn't involve that.

I apologize, I forgot. Sure wish my neighbor still had his cat, it was demon on moles, but coyotes got it for supper.
