I haven't seen 'pasties' on a menu since I was eating at the Chao Phya in Bangkok 1974!

The wife and I make two dozen each fall, we eat one or two fresh out of the oven then freeze the rest to eat during the rest of the year.
The filling is made from cubed round steak and cubed russet potatoes.
The crust is a special crust (my mother in laws recipe) and we slaver them in brown gravy.
I've never had one in a restaurant, so I can't compare them to any others, in fact I'd never even heard of one before I meet my wife of 40 years.

If a pastie is EVER dry or not tasty, you did not get a real pastie! Please try again.

I grew up on pasties made by my English grandmother. She would get up early in the morning to make the pasties, wrap them in newspaper to retain some of the heat and send them off with my Scottish grandfather who worked in the copper mines.
What most of you have eaten are a poor excuse for a pasty made by one of the miner's wives.
Gravy was a sacrilege and would probably get you written out of the will.
If my first introduction to pasties was what many places sell today I would never have eaten a second one.
Same with authentic Amish fry pies but that is for another thread.

What I would like to see is an old-fashioned FULL pastie, complete with dessert at one end (fruit filling). The miners didn't use gravy or ketchup, but they still could get a two-course meal!

Nothing wrong with slathered in butter, with a little ketchup. Lead miners in my area used to put them in their pockets to keep warm when they went down in the mines. I was raised on them for a quick meal. There is competition in the UP for the best pasties. I love them all.

You should consider volunteering or workamping in the Mackinaw area which would include a RV site. Campgrounds are always looking for help during for the 3 month tourist season. BTDT (Soo Locks Volunteer) and it was a great experience.

i don't think my current employer would like that. I do have a cabin about 40 minutes from there.
