Her return is totally legal and correct. It is what our fine friends in Washington and Albany have created.

Tom, your intent is great, but what you are talking about is a national sales tax. I'm sure you have never had the "pleasure" of going through a sales tax audit on your business. If you think there is fraud on the personal level you should see some of the stuff that goes on with sales tax.

There are two other major problems with a national sales tax. One is that it would disproportionately hit those that are poor and the other is the matter of exemptions. Can you imagine the cry of pain if churches had to pay that tax? Okay, so let's give them an exemption. Well, then what about schools and educational institutions? Okay, we'll give them an exemption too. So now some guy comes up with a bogus school or religion and voila, he doesn't pay the tax that everyone else pays.

Years ago two guys in Seattle started a religion, which is tax exempt under US law. Their religion consisted of watching X-rated movies and getting "donations" from their patrons. I think they are getting out of prision soon, but they may still be there.

The myth that the rich pay no taxes is another good one. In 2008 the top 1% of taxpayers paid more in taxes than the bottom 95%. The cutoff point was a little over $400,000 in taxable income, which I think most of us would agree would be in the upper income group.

Yes tax time again, When I sign the check to our government, Federal and State, I think of the Service Man and Woman who stand on forigein soil who do not go home every night to thier families, who defend us, who bleed for us, who make the ultimate sacrifice for us. Yes, there is waste in our nation. For all of us who have been in a forigein land away from our loved one. Who am I to complain sitting safely in our country, with my family here with me, having hot coffee and hot chow everyday. Sorry, I'll get down off my soapbox now.

Safe Travels

I think thats why it is called income tax, more income, more taxes. Top 1% must make a whole lot more money than the bottom 95%.

A VAT (national tax) would just get added to the current income tax. Too many people make money from the current broken system, CPA's attorneys, IRS employees just to name a few.

Actually, Congress enacted what amounts to a "flat tax" in 1986 the last time our tax code was overhauled. It was a two tier flat tax. Problem is it's been amended twelve thousand (12,000) times since 1986....... Take a look at the FairTax, don't dismiss it with out reading the bill and there is also two books about it. The first is The FairTax and the second is answering the critics. In all cases of criticism the facts of the FairTax have to be changed in order to "fit" their findings..... Don't count on our government coming up with a solution, our elected officials are the reason for this mess !

Do you know the reasons the income tax laws are so complex? Part of it is social engineering and part of it is to make the tax laws fair. It is supposed to be a combination of the liberal "let's take care of everyone" and the conservative "let's take a practical approach to the problem." End result is a mishmash that is fully understood by noone including those responsible for enforcing it. It does need to be greatly simplified and the give aways on both ends reduced.
