"oldkokomo"......I opened this thread thinking it would be related to horsepower or some other testosterone subject. I was completely surprised to see the topic and thought it would go sideways quickly. After reading through, it was interesting and informative. Luckily, I started taking Saw Palmetto about 10 years ago (51) and still can pee across the sidewalk, but I'm sure it will eventually catch up with me.

"oldkomo".. good luck to you and "Mr_D" on the surgery.....I hope it has you peeing across the sidewalk in short order! "Mr_D"......maybe yours is related to owning too many cats! :-)

Mr D, good luck on the TURP. If you have time, what kind of TURP will yours be? I'm a little confused with talk of colored lasers, roto rooters, etc. Thought a TURP was just a TURP.

Thanks coral, been reading up on green laser. Sounds great. My principal doubt relates to a radio wave heating (radiofrequency ablation??) a doc did on me about 15 years ago. It was pretty painful and accomplished exactly nothing. So I'm a little suspicious, but of course a laser is different from radio frequency etc. The radio thing was so painful, had complications, etc that I decided just to die with the problem. But it has gotten worse and the lack of good sleep is probably harmful in itself. I used a urologist here in Tyler, TX and he may not have been the best. Maybe I need to try someone in the Dallas area who does a lot of TURP, or laser.

I take saw palmetto from 1 to 3 times a day, by day 1 or 2 everything is cleared up and normal. TRY IT !! No bad side effects !!

There is an alternative to open prostate surgery ( incision in belly ) called "Robotic Laparoscopic Prostatectomy, Urology Associates Of Central California Robotic Surgery Specialty Center | Urology Associates of Central California. I was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer. All CT scans and bone scan was clear so "it" is coming out. My bil had open surgery 2002 and is still up right at 82. Watch your psa # closely. Live long and pee longer.

My BIL is planning to have the UroLift procedure done soon. It sounds like it is the most non-invasive procedure out there. Maybe give it a try and if not the results you want, get more aggressive.

Something that some of you might want to consider if you can not sleep through the night, get tested for sleep apnea. I was having a very difficult time getting a full, restful night of sleep. Got tested and started using a CPAP machine, a machine to assist in suppressing sleep apnea symptoms. My frequent night-time urges to go to the bathroom were eliminated. It stopped my snoring problem also. I now sleep through the night and pee with reckless abandonment.

I am 72, not overweight and am not taking any meds.

Had it done about 3 years ago. (laproscopy; not the big incision one) Overnight stay, no pain whatsoever, catheter taken out the next morning before going home at 9:00am. I still piss like a racehorse. The Dr. told me something interesting. He said if you live til your 90s, you will die from prostate cancer. No matter what you've had done. He said they may call it natural causes, which it is, but it is prostate cancer. Good luck and keep up the great attitude. You will be much more happier when all is said and done.

Actually having too many cats is only a problem when the jump on my bladder in the middle middle of the night, especially the red almost 20# female.

Interesting subject. I was getting up at least once every night about 3 am. Sometimes again about 430 or 5. My problem was cured when I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and started using a CPAP machine. I haven't gotten up even once since starting the CPAP. When I mentioned it to the Dr he said the body produces more urine when you are sleeping poorly.

OK, thanks all; good info. I plan to do something, probably button turp, but then I guess the doctor could talk me into plain turp or green laser. Hope I don't have such a large prostate that they say full surgery is needed. Even at age 80, I can't keep putting up w/this. Now to find a doctor; so hard to identify the good ones; the bad ones can really mess you up. Thanks again.
