I don't remember saying I "feel like working". It's more like I'm self employed and "I don't feel like starving."

Right. Fail to change HOW?
Change has to be for the better to be good. Change for the worse I would think failure. Unless one can rebound, change, to a better end.
What are the standards and guideposts?
President McKinley's quote, like more politicians, misses these.

It sounds good at first hearing, but leaves me doubtful. (Cynical, perhaps?)

Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes when he was on trip to Washington. Holmes forgot his ticket but the train conductor reassured him, “Do not worry about your ticket. We all know who you are. When you get to your destination, you can find it and just mail it to us.” Holmes responded, “My dear man, the problem is not my ticket. The problem is, where am I going?”

Ever since retiring at the end of 2019, I've taken to read the biographies of each US President starting with Washington. Not only are these men unique, the biographies themselves give a breathtaking montage of our country from its founding through its development. Big eye opener - I never realized that Polk had gun-ships in SF, Monterey, and San Diego. We stormed the beach of San Pedro. Fought major battles in and around Los Angeles. Amazing stuff I never learned in our "public education system". Maybe I was out sick that day? Anyway, James K. Polk. Kind of like James Monroe. Polk was a kick-a$$, Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise, kind-of guy.

"Foreign powers do not seem to appreciate the true character of our government."

"The Presidency is no bed of roses."

"It is confidently believed that our system may be safely extended to the utmost bounds of our territorial limits."

"When I observed a strong man approaching I generally took advantage of him by being a little quicker than he was and seizing him by the tip of the fingers, giving him a hearty shake, and thus preventing him from getting a full grip upon me."

I think there’s a lot of wisdom in this quote:

“It’s better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.”

That was almost certainly true considering that the US was founded as a representative republic and almost every other government that we dealt with either a monarchy or was run by some other central powerful group. The idea that regular citizens could determine our government ministers and our policy was surely startling to them.

Even the most representative governments in the UK, Europe and what we knew of Asia when the US was founded were nothing of the sort.

Roger that, AJM. We all would be better off if we could get back to "classic liberalism" again. The one thing that never seems to stop is the back and forth of politics. Some of the issues and arguments I'm reading about, even back to the founding, involve the same thing we see on the news today. Almost word for word.
