When I moved from the suburbs to rural Oklahoma I built a chicken coop and traded a week of child care for a rooster and 12 young hens. The rooster and 10 of the hens were Rhode Island Reds, the other 2 were Buff Orphingtons. At first things were ok, but by the 3rd week the Buffs were getting picked on. The following week I went out to feed and found one beheaded and half eaten. I let the other Buff out of the pen but it quit hanging around after a couple of weeks so something probably got it.

A few months later I went to collect eggs just before dark. I stuck my hand into the nest box and touched a snake. That was the last day I had chickens. I gave them to the neighbor who came down and shot the snake.

Are you sure you want chickens, Tim?

Hey, speaking of kids and grandkids, I'd been wanting to ask about traveling with them in an RV. All our grands are littles and not quite old enough to go all day without a nap. I don't think I want to put a playpen on top of my bed for that!

But, Grandpa and I get all misty eyed about taking the little mudpie makers camping. We did it every year with our kids when we were tent camping, but an RV seems like it might make things harder. Amiright? Or has it just been too many decades since I was chasing ankle biters around?

One of our mutants wrote "The Crowded Camper Goes to Little Rock". Littles & 2 big dogs. It's a fun read. Shall I send you a copy? Or go to Amazon.

Someone else who actually has grands will have to step up here, but I believe that having an RV makes things easier in some ways. Water, toilet, fold-up bed ... Mother used to call it the tin tent.

Give it a try!

Cheers!

Barb I'll be sure to not get racists chickens so the'll get along. As far as the snakes, a few golf balls placed in the nest will take care of them. Snakes love golf and spend the rest of their lives playing with the golf balls.

Barb, just fyi, we met another rv-er in Tombstone, AZ whose traveling companion was a hen. Sena would love that!

Don't worry about the ABS light too much right now. There are sensors at the wheels and/or rear axle. They can fail or just be dirty, doesn't affect regular braking, just helps in a panic stop. Look up 'ABS Sensor testing' or replacement for more information. Remember, people here are more than willing to help with any problems you have with your new coach.

The lights are working again, they just quit 2 blocks from home when my son was driving it home from the Winn Dixie parking lot. Hmm, might be a name for it there. The old owner wouldn't drive it to our house, and made us drive it home without a plate, and of course there were 2 cops with flashers on we had to pass holding our breath.
I'm busy reading the manuals, (even they smell old) taking the cushions out, thinking that is where most of the old RV smell is coming from. (22 yrs old)
My son was all, "so typical of a female. "You're all what should I clean first", He's all look at all the buttons to push!"
Any one bored yet?
Too bad.
So, nothing has been used in the van system wise I think in 18 years or the last 100,000 miles of it's 134,956. I know it needs new tires, probably a brake job, son says they go waaayy down when you step on them. That's right, I haven't driven it yet, and still have to put the plates on it. Where's the chicken icon?
I have probably most of the repair records, which was a little scary reading.
Looks like he's had some trouble getting the brakes working properly because he just replaced the booster and pads (I have receipts) a year and about 300 miles ago, and the ABS light 'just came on'.
Here's the free popcorn to keep reading.

Is there a word limit?
I want to go to the Tampa RV show, they have a couple of classes there and I'd like to see all the stuff I can't buy yet, cause I don't know what I'll need or be able to afford once I have it up on a rack somewhere.
Kind of like deciding to get on a rollercoaster huh? At least I didn't spend 10s of thousands of dollars to find out it needs all kinds of repairs. My goal was less than $10,000 and I may make it!
I'll post pictures when I figure out how. Have to go put the plate on for my maiden voyage today!
Some info:
Contains the Popular 170

Happy trails!

Do you not remember how often they (Mary and I ) are gone?
Do you not remember who has to take care of their place when their gone?
DIL added in, so how many do you think we should get grampa?

I see a coup and pen coming in the future. An Orange chicken would be nice. A friend has some that lay green eggs. Time will tell.
Don't forget Tim, if you want eggnog you have to milk the chickens.

Oh, and if you do get some chickens get a donkey to put in the area with them. Keeps the coyote an big cats away.

As a substitute you could stand in the area. Oops!

We have fresh eggs all the time. Get them for $3 a dozen and yep, green ones also. I save them for Easter.

Thanks, Di

We have now finally re-occupied the rig, hoping for an early getaway tomorrow. Went to make our evening cuppa and found ants, Arkansas ants, alive in the kettle.
So here's a thought. If we bring said ants back to the RV park, can we claim an extra free night?

Only if the ants are wearing their Razorbacks T-shirts.

Safe journey, you two!
