Poor Smarty!

That is what happens when a tire goes flat and you donít realize it. I'm surprised that I didnít start any range fires. The piece of tire in the picture was in the raids where we turned. BTW Smart Cars donít have spare tires because they put different sizes on the back and front. It's not likely there will be a wheel available without shipping it.

We were WAY out in the boonies. I was heading up US 93 and turned into a rest area about 12 miles north of Pioche, Nevada. I take that route so I can avoid all the traffic around Salt Lake City.

Smarty was put on a trailer and taken 273 miles to the nearest certified Smart Car service center - in Orem, UT, just south of SLC. We didnít follow as the driver was trying to get there before the shop closed at 5pm. I donít drive that fast, especially over mountains.

We have stopped for the night near Great Basin National Park and might go visit if I can chat with the folks who have Smarty. I doubt they will have parts in stock so it may be mid week before she's ready to travel again.

Ten years ago this would have been a disaster. But the fact that I was driving our home and we donít have a schedule to keep just makes this a speed bump. Having solar panels means we can stop anywhere. I'd much rather spend a few extra days out here than in Salt Lake.

And I must praise my roadside assistance company - FMCA. They arranged and paid for Smarty to be taken to the shop. Within 15 minutes it was planned. I could only get cell service if I stood on the shoulder of the highway. I wasnít interested in being there for longer than necessary.

But tomorrow I get to deal with State Farm. Wish me luck.

Holy smokes Barb! Hope everything's OK otherwise.

We've been using Tire Minder from Minder Research in Stuart Florida.

Holy Moly, Jeff! Yours looks scary! I didnít even know mine was a problem until I stopped.

I just got a call from the guy who took Smarty. It took him 9+ hours to do this job. The place that Roadside assistance sent him to didnít exist at that address.

Smarty is now at a Smart/Mercedes dealer in Draper, Utah. I'm sure they must be laughing at my Beverly Hillbillies toad there. The kayak and some pipe are on the roof and there is a hitch platform on the back with assorted stuff that didnít fit in RV or car. Smarty is also full of stuff. Imagine the scene when I show up with Sena. Somebody's gonna think they're getting punked.

Yaknow... it's amazing ya didn't do more damage to Smartie.... I'm a tad concerned about water for your consumption if you are out in the boonies....

Lol more than likely Barb, this blowout happened last Sunday for us, it was a scary ride for sure. We have an insurance claim number already and appointments made luckily enough even though we had to buy a temporary steel wheel we can at least travel.

I guess I'm the odd one out with a Tire Trakker TPMS. Hey, I passed their booth first at Quartzite... Working fine so far and a lifetime warranty (so they said).
So far only blown a trailer tire, bent up the trailer fender a bit though.

Like I said, found this campground by accident due to a detour. Checked the listing in the Good Sam book and decided to give it a try. I took a cople photos of our site, should get them on here tomorrow night.

Well it may be as simple as low coolant. Looking at the ECU data, itís been complaining about coolant level and low reading. Guess I need coolant, wonder where it went.

Link to my mutant campground list

Try to click on the following link to see the list of campgrounds that mutants have stayed at. The intro to the list makes it self explanatory.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...yxc/edit#gid=0

Wish you luck. Hope it helps somewhere during your travels.

I've also decided I need a TPMS on my coach and toad. Any recommendations?

This is why
Yep, TST. Great customer service if needed and they back up their product.

Also I recommend the TST flow through sensors. So much easier to put in or let out air when needed. With the non-flow through you have to use the special tool to take the sensor off. This would be every time you go through a car wash, check the tires, etc.

Check, check, check, to ensure that the sensor will not stick out pass the edge of the rim. TST will give you the dimensions of the sensor and then just use a tape measure to eye-ball the stem and sensor length. Shorter stems can be installed and they should be metal stems, not the typical rubber pull through stem.

Questions always welcome and If I can't answer them I'll ask Mr. Know It All, Tim.
