Long pants, short pants, dosn't really matter, we're just glad you had some on!

I caught this guy after a bunch of folks saw me with my camera at the edge of Lake Michigan at Mill Creek. He was quite a ways off so I was lucky to have the big lens with me.

Due to where the cables of the suspension bridge are tied into the bedrock, you can't really see through the entire end-to-end view of the bridge. Here you can see the cement pilings for the cables on the north side of the bridge. The bridge itself continues on past that.

Here is a similar view from the shore on the south side of the bridge, looking north. Again, the pilings are in the way to see all the way across.

And for an island without motorized vehicles, downtown still winds up with lots of traffic.

Nice pics Carl!

My best half's son worked construction as a diesel mechanic. He was given clearance from the bridge authority to go up in the elevator (inside the pillar) to the top of the center main highest pillars with the bridge inspectors. He took pictures of the roadway wayyyyy down there.....and several other pics. The view up there is just breathtaking, even in a photograph. He crossed the "catwalk" across the top of the pillars from one side to the other.
Not many people are ever given that opportunity, I know I'd sure jump at it. The Mighty Mac is one of my favorite engineering marvels.

If I'm ever able to get copies of the pics I'll post 'em here.

P.S.- It took 3 years to build that structure and 3 men died in the process. By the enormity of the job, that's actually a low casualty rate. One of the men is in one of the pillars. He fell into the wet concrete (like Waylon's verse in the song "Highway Man"). There is a grave marker in the worker's honor on the bridge pillar.

Now why would I think there is more to this innocuous post than just a simple request for a picture?

OK Timster time to spill the beans,

There must be a lot of concrete in that pillar! A body is a really big "foreign body". I'd think it would mess with the structural integrity to have something that large replacing concrete. What a horrible way to die.
