A straight flight route which is typical, is obviously the shortest time wise. Just found it interesting.
Hi Electra. In answer to your comment yes, the flight path would be straight if the earth was flat. Since we live on a globe, the shortest distance between two points would be the great circle route. Chicago is at a lower latitude than London but planes do not head southwest from London. They head northwest out over Scotland, heading in a straight line, passing Iceland and the tip end of Greenland, whilst the bearing is gradually turning from northwest to southwest. They eventually follow the St Lawrence river and overfly Michigan from the northeast. Now, consider what an 'over the pole' route would look like on a 2D flat map.
I still wonder how Google recorded that trip.

Ah yes, I see. I actually was thinking/looking at it as a 2-D map. Hence my question.
As for Google, that is a mystery. Perhaps there exists a circuitry now that allows the phone to never actually power completely down, save smashing it with a hammer........ or battery removed. Even then there could be capcitors storing power for a while. That's kind of spooky eh? But could be useful in an emergency locating someone etc, I suppose.
Thanks for the tour and photos, very interesting.

Bill.

Actually, I forgot, it doesn't matter. If you have a modern phone and you are running *any* Google app on that phone, you have given Google permission to use your information as they see fit.

I saw this article on CBS morning or some show, can't remember where, here it is:
