That was a very interesting video, Carl. I'm pretty sure though I had turned the phone fully off. The other thing is surely the only way Google could track a phone in airplane mode is by GPS and I wonder if a stowed phone on the plane could receive the signal. My thoughts are that Google knew the time and location at O'Hare and later at Heathrow and then interpolated the route between. My DBIL has now posited that Google had already determined which flight we were on and plotted the flight path from other sources!
Now, here's another interesting picture. Taken from the seatback screen just before landing, it shows the holding pattern we followed. Skyboss (Hi Don) would appreciate this though I suspect he never had to hold planes outside Champaign. This is the northern (Watford) tower where we entered the stack from the southwest and tracked round three loops, losing height and consuming time before leaving to the south on final approach. I expect there were about five other planes in the tower.
We're returning home on Wednesday but in the meantime we will continue to catch up with the family. Today we lunch at a Carvery restaurant at another golf course.

Martin,

Do you golf, or just tour golf venues? Oh, I know! The most authentic food is found at golf course restaurants.

At the moment, Barb, I go where I'm taken.

A straight flight route which is typical, is obviously the shortest time wise. Just found it interesting.

As Martin stated. Also if one is trying to communicate by HAM radio the signals also follow the Great Circle path. (Other radio signals also)

As for Google, that is a mystery. Perhaps there exists a circuitry now that allows the phone to never actually power completely down, save smashing it with a hammer........ or battery removed. Even then there could be capcitors storing power for a while. That's kind of spooky eh? But could be useful in an emergency locating someone etc, I suppose.
Thanks for the tour and photos, very interesting.

Bill.

Years ago, when I was practicing the W@$k stuff, law enforcement could use the location devices in phones to track criminals. One case in particular caught a kidnapper that started out in Florida and was caught in Northeast somewhere using tracking technology. Given that the cell phone technology at that time would give a general vicinity, then the LEO's would use conventional direction finding methods to narrow it down.

I'm not sure how present day technology works but back then the signals were off of a tower and as the cell traveled it would only give the tower location. Then once it stopped traveling the LEOs would move in with DF equipment to narrow it down.

Now go back to your rack

Dave, don't forget the flux-capacitor.

Barb, I can attest to that and also some times she tells him "where" to go. Amazing that he is always happy to be on his way.

Ed Rairie here: To all RVM's out there I finally made it to the last page and still would like to become a member of your group. I don't have a fancy motorhome. I bought my 2001 Winnebago Journey DL DP back in 2003 after the previous owner passed away. After he passed on, his wife just kind of let it go. I did some things to make improvements to it and used it for business when I was in the Chemical Manufacturing business. I have gotten rid of most of most of my houses and possessions and have managed to survive a bout with cancer which I am so thankful for. When one gets ride of most things they own, and survive what some of us have gone through, we realize it's really time to get back out on the road and spend time seeing all of what North America has to offer and not ever worry about all the material things that you've sold and also given away. I have what I have, don't miss anything and keep donating more and I don't miss not having material things. Also have no rope lights on my rig, but did notice a post or two about rope lights keeping the rats away from the rig. Think I could be an RVM and would like to become a member.

So Ed, are you saying you don't have rope lights and you don't miss them?

Also the final exam of becoming an RV Mutant is to declare that the journey is the destination.

I guess you got my email.

What part of the country do you hail from now?

I'm more worried about the possibility of two Waynes?

Also we could nickname this new one Edwardo? make him an honourary Italian.
