I'm just busy working on my many projects. Today I hope to finish the second Black Soldier Fly habitat. I have to keep them above 70* so they will lay eggs. That’s not a problem for the sunny part of the day, but I’m still trying to find an affordable plan for keeping them warm at night. Anyone have any ideas that don’t involve electricity? Being off grid has a few challenges.

Barb I don’t remember, so tell me again and save me a lot of back reading.
Why are you growing flys?

Is there a way that you could heat up rocks (fire) and then put the rocks in close proximity to the flys at night. Possibly under a tent of blankets

Or it could be a busy time for some. While my eldest son, oldest GS and I spent the past couple days at deer camp the 8 yo GD helped Mary decorate the house and Christmas Tree.

Now I’m sure Wayne has been setting at home thinking of things that Earlene needs to do for him!

Kevin is still begging for cookies, don’t remember what kind but I’m sure he’s begging.

Ed’s is talking to birds now and Carl’s has been for years.

Dennis is having high hopes of seeing me soon, Dave is sunning in AZ

David now walking upright, Steve is taking surfing lessons and some of this might be true!

So Sue, Martin here’s hoping you get your nap time in cause if your like you still have leftovers!

And Di is riding in Larry’s new toy… He is driving again, so we got a second car. Sweet luck

I will feed the fly larvae to fish that are going to be in my Aquaponics system. Black soldier fly larvae are very high in protein. Chickens like them, also. They are masterful composers and keep the compost from smelling bad. They turn kitchen scraps into compost for your garden. They also don’t bother humans or animals since the flies don’t eat during their 5-7 day lifespan. The only downside is that house flies try to get inside their screen house.

Hmmm, fire… That I hadn’t considered. They need humidity, too. Maybe I can simmer some water on my small gas grill inside the plastic tent I’m building for them. We’ll only need it at night now. Thanks!

There’s a fish farm 20 miles from here that grows tilapia and catfish for restaurants. The groundwater is a bit salty, but both can tolerate it. I'll be using reverse osmosis water that I get from a neighbor who is on the community water system or rainwater … if it ever rains again.

I’m going catfishing in Arizona
We’re the flies, don’t even bite
Know a woman that has a ranch there
Where her heard is soldier flys!

Yep, sounds like a country song in the making!

Sounds like you've been reading the old OGF magazines from the 70s! (That's Organic Gardening & Farming, fer you younguns.)

Good on ya, Barb!
