Just to be clear - I did not get the shot and then the flu. But I have heard that routinely.

For me it was a matter of never having had the flu and I have very little chance of exposure. I've not had a cold since before the early 80’s and I'm not actually sure I've had a true cold since childhood. So, I'm thinking I'm pretty resistant to viral illnesses.

My daughter has a good friend who is a researcher who explained that today's flu shots are not live viruses so you can NOT get sick from the shot. Each year's shot adds a new piece to your flu immunity. Medicare also pays 100% on them. In other words I no longer had a good reason to avoid getting one.

On the topic of vaccines, the monkey community has hotly debated the issue of us owners getting the shingles and/or chickenpox vaccines. Both of those are live virus vaccines and do carry a small risk of causing the disease. Both of these viruses are close to 100% fatal in capuchin monkeys. If you are planning to attend the GC@CL and would like to interact with Sena and are thinking about either vaccine, PLEASE consider doing it soon.

I have had chickenpox and have opted not to risk the shingles vaccine for her sake.

The flu is a general term that describes a lot of different viruses. Just because you got this year's flu shot that contained flu A, B & C, doesn't mean you are protected from the rest of the flu alphabet and then viruses are capable of mutating. Unless you are tested for which virus has caused your flu, you'll never know. The nurse that Steve met at the ER is exposed to every crud that comes along. Not a job I envy.

Barb, great news on the scheduleing for knee surgery. I'd challenge you to a race at the GC but it wouldn't be fair as I will still be on old joints.

Did have a question about Sena. Does she bit, even in a playful manner?

The reason I never liked cats much was regardless of how friendly I got with them, they always seemed to want to test me. They would bit playfully one time then out of the blue attack like a jungle cat. Must say that leaves me a little jumpy around cats, or anything that bits.

Diane and all, I should let any nurses here speak, but it is my understanding that yes, you can get the flu shot and then get a flu... but it isn't the same strain that the shot was formulated for. Each year, they make an educated guess as to 2-3 strains they think will be prevalent, then formulate the immunization for that. There is no way to know for a certainty which strains will emerge in a given year, and have enough time to make vaccines for everyone.

When I worked in a hospital and nursing homes, I got a flu shot. When I did home health, I did not.
I haven't had a flu shot since 2000. I have had the flu one time since then.

Am pondering it this year. I am not so sure H1N1 is included in the vaccine they are giving out for mass usage. Would be worth asking about.

If you full time in your Moho... you are isolated a good deal of the time or are outside when a lot of communal contact occurs, lessening the chance of contracting those bugs. However, this is a 2 edged issue because then you also aren't requiring your immune system to keep up with the various 'bugs' going around. This is why it is after holidays and family/large group indoor gatherings people will finally succumb to these 'bugs'.

If I knew I was going to fly anywhere during flu season, I would definitely get a shot.

Hey Steve it's good to hear a little of the appetite is coming back. After all, you gotta work on that figure before the GC and get it back to round status. Hate that bronchitis cause you cough your head off till your ribs get sore. You hang in there buddy. I am one of the procrastinators who hasn't gotten a flu shot but Barb and I are taking care of that this weekend. Get well my friend!

I have heard that the current strain of virus going around is the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). Did this years flu shot cover that? I don't know, but Earlene and I both get the flu shot each year. We both contracted a cold when the son, d-i-l, and tow granddaughters showed up for Christmas whooping. Mine is nothing severe. Central chest congestion and some coughing. Earlene on the other had got an ear infection and perforated ear drum and it is on-going. Monday is another Dr. appointment for her. I get very concerned when she coughs, because of COPD.

Barb, I only had one knee replaced. I tried to get them to do both at the same time but the Dr. said that the insurance companies would not allow it. I still need the left one done but I don't like that same 9+ weeks down time. I've been taking KRILL oil and it has helped very much. Symptoms still come up when I walk to much, but they diminish faster with the krill oil, so I THINK.

Glad you are having it done. I can walk a considerable amount on the "new" knee without discomfort compared to the one needing work. I think you'll be happy at the final outcome.

I'm not getting any shots before the GC so Sena will be safe unless I bite her, then she becomes monkey meat, bbq'd on a stick. Umm! Good!

Steve, I am PMing you a joke. Its about an Italian wedding. Not PC enough for a general admission voucher.

Laugh long and then smirk about who sent it.

Get well and get back to running things. #1 ain't as good a goofoff as #2.

Tim,

You have nothing to worry about Sena using her teeth on human skin. We settled that issue when she was 2 months old. The 3rd time she tried to nip at me, she remembered what happened the first 2 times and she has never even attempted in the 16+ years since. In the jungle, monkey moms teach their newborns the rules with swift harsh consequences and I'm a good monkey mom.

About a week before the GC I'll send a long message to the email list explaining some things about Sena and capuchin behavior. Those who do want to interact with her will get more attention with a little tutoring about her whats and whys. I'll be happy to answer any and all questions. I love to talk about her. She is a totally different creature from any wild or zoo monkey. She is rarely caged and "monkey see, monkey do" is very much a reality that I regret occasionally forgetting.

Stephanie starts the seeds in a small square pot about 2". Then they go to a 5 gal pail. The pail gets put out when we stop and picked up before we go. I put it on newspaper in the MH to keep down the dirt problem. She isn't happy about the size of the garden but at least it's something.
