El Ka-Dennis - your search is much appreciated!!

I live 4 miles from one of those listed that is right next to the freeway and largely permanent occupancy, the other is close to Bonita and.... And the really sad thing is - at Lake Lavon the COE CGs are and have been pretty sad for years - the private ones around that lake don't review too well but I have not been by to check them out lately. The ones around Lake Lewisville were always nicer but I haven't visited them in a couple of years either.

Unfortunately in this area - there may not be a shortage of CGs - but there is a shortage of big rig friendly places that qualify as more than an overnight stop IMHO.

We all face this dilemma when seeking CGs - can you trust the reviews - do the pictures tell the story, why does their websites seem useless in helping me make the decision - are they hiding the good, the bad or the ugly, is it overrun with permanent residents? And ya can't even rely on name - not local but see KOA Kerrville Tx for example.

I know there isn't a bad view or CG in your area but down here it's another story It's also understandable. It's a big city, rural areas have been gobbled up by progress for decades, it's not really a campers destination, in and around the city the price of land and development would make owning a CG a costly proposition. Just is what it is. I'm probably overly cautious in "recommending" a place around here, hence the personal scouting report!!

Steve,

Not trying to get you not to check out Coopers Lake but I know it is a distance from Plano. Just wasn't sure if you want to make that drive. If you do we can have a mini-mini curiosity with a lunch stop in Sulphur Springs.

Jim
Thanks Jim. I got your PM - am W-ing now - will try to call a little later on perhaps right as you're sitting down to dinner. Lol.

Seriously, I was just kidding. I didn't even want to watch the game. If it had been the US - Well that would have been another story. But alas!

I wear the pantyhose.....er pants, and Earlene said we are going to visit her cousin in or around the Arlington area. We will be getting there a few days early. One day with her, one hour with you, and the rest of the time with friends....

In October 2010 we stayed at the Dallas KOA in Arlington. Acceptable. Don't remember the price but I get a 10% discount for whatever that is worth. (I can take you for an onion samich with my savings.)

If I had it to do all over again I would get a MH that was boondock capable. Howevrer, with a 600 watt inverter, I'm very limited with what I can run and I'm not running the Jenny all night as it makes Earlene grumpy when she can't sleep. (Wait...Hmmm! Is that what causes it?) Anyhow, Wallyworlds and large parking lots without electricity are not for us. I can do without water and sewer hook-up for one night.

Also, my drive time is about 250 miles a day, give or take 20 miles. Less is okay. Will just have to see where the rally point is for the caravan. If all else fails, see you at GC@CL.

Herb, what is the CG that you are staying in now?

Hey Wayne - point of reference for consideration (which btw - I had you in mind when I found this place...!)

Arlington to GC @ CL = ~ 314 miles

Arlington to Cooper Lake SP = ~ 106 miles

Cooper Lake SP to GC @ CL = ~ 228 miles

The overall distance is a bit further when going to GC @ CL from Arlington via Cooper Lake - but it breaks the trip down into two nice segments.

I also think the Cooper Lake SP will be as nice or nicer than anything along I-30 headed toward CL (Jim or Jim and I will scout Cooper out). I did some looking on the route up I-30 and didn't really see a place that looked overly inviting mid way between Dallas and Hot Springs. Not saying it doesn't exist - just didn't see it. At $26 for a night, if Cooper is as good as it sounds - it could be a nice place for a layover curiosity of mutants.

Warning: The following is a joke. It is only a joke. If it was a real statement it would not be followed by funny-looking emoticons. Repeat, this is only a joke.

The journey must be the destination cause the preplanning phase is simply exhausting!!!

For folks like me that suffer from the dreaded Anal Retentive Syndrome of the Brain (also known as "ARS") it is an exhausting challenge.

NEVER THE LESS

Not trying to get the cart too far ahead of the horse but from Cooper's Lake, I believe this would be our best route. Tim...I think this is what you said...check it out.

Cooper Lake SP to GC@CL

Per Google Maps 228 miles and 3+28 drive time but with a 30 minutes stop for my "kids" and an average speed of say, 55 MPH comes to about 4+45 travel time.

I-30 seems a tad desolate for meeting points for folks merging into that route from other points. Here are some I have found that might be considered if we want to keep a plan open for that. Of course, if we want to say "be there or be square" there is no need read further and to suffer (With me?) as I appease my ARS tendencies.

I-30 rest stop about 19 east of Sulfur Springs, TX. Sulfur Spings to rests top

Flying J NE of Texarkana Texarkana Flying J (About the 1/2 point.)

TA Truck Stop Prescott, AR TA Presocott, AR About 1+15 out from CL

Love's Prescott, AR Love's Presott, AR About 1+15 out from CL

I sure hope you can get your plans figgered out soon. As for those of us unable to attend the GC@CL, this planning is a bit tiresome. WAA WAA I can't go!!
But I still hope you all have the best time ever.

Well Scouting reports are kind of fun when pictures are included - but arm turning and cajoling has been tiresome - and probably worse for those unable to attend. Where Dons dogs will do their duties - that's where I draw the line.

When that time comes, the wagon train leader will be getting a call.

Arkansas Welcome Center. Just east of Texas / Arkansas state line. Next exit past Exit 108 (the welcome center has it's own exit but it is not numbered)

Lady said there is plenty of big rig parking, hot coffee and maps if we need them .

Just another option.

Hi Judy,

I will apologize for the travel plan fiasco that I think I created. But hopefully you will understand having never been to Texas before I was just trying to get logistic info, I thought everyone lived logistics ermmmmm maybe only if you drive a brown truck.

Cheers !!!!!!
