Lessee ... Wire mesh underground from fence to fence, hawk wire overhead, shotguns on motion detectors ... what have I forgotten? [emoji33]
Minks got my friends' birds twice before retribution, coyotes got another's, hawks are always a hungry menace ... YMMV. Maybe you should keep a guard llama in there with the hens. Gets complicated fast, don't it?!
Having said all that, that's some good-lookin coop you've built there, chickens are multi-purpose food/entertainment critters, and GKs will benefit by having the experience. Get em gathering those eggs early!

My grandma had over 100 hens that we "helped" her with.
We named several that we could never find again, being they were all white. [emoji6]
The coop was closed at night. Few loses except for daytime airborne marauders.
Early eggs were pullets, a bit blue and 1/2 size. She said "Those are all yours". So we got to eat them, my older sisters doing the cooking. We all wanted the smallest eggs, so we had to take turns!
Ahhh Grams and our babyhood. ❤️

Wonderful memories!
We lost our chickens ultimately to kids and dogs. Kids not closing the coop yard gate properly, and country dogs from the neighbor. But while it lasted, kids had a ton of fun.
MIL had a pellet gun for critters hanging around her coop. Had lost a few to diggers.

Oh, yeah. Gathering eggs was my job, and I hated those pecking beaks! Not too fond of 3' sn@w drifts either. But the memories are priceless, and I love chickens, live or on my plate. And eggs too, even.

Grams chickens were free range, making them healthy and ever-so-tasty. They roosted at dusk, wherever they were. In a tree where owls prowl was not wise.
Hence, the song came forth:

Mary is really getting on board with this, she has an apron with multiple pockets to place eggs in and a smaller one for GD to wear to gaither those eggs! I'm already thinking I didn't build coop large enough!

Its great at your age you still remember those times, now you see why I'm doing this. I want my GKs to have great memories! Didn't mean to be a wise crack on your age, just saying some memories last a lifetime!

Ed said he left his checkbook home. I told him that he could use his credit card as a down payment. Jackie wasn't hearing that but she did see a nice 5th wheel she really liked.
We already spent our allowance for the next 20 years.

Tim,
Friends of our has chickens. They keep a donkey close by and it keeps the predators away.
You could have a donkey near the coop, or you could stand there - same thing.

Hey Carl, this was custom made for me. Just found the picture. It is the one that the pickup truck drive broadsided me at 55 mph.

Did you always ride on the sidewalk?

But how do you keep snakes out? Touching in a nest one at dust was my last straw. The chickens left, coop and all, the very next day.
Tim, don't forget the lights on timers. I seem to remember they need 14 hours of light to keep laying consistently.

Why y'all don’t leave the frigid north and spend the winter in southern AZ is a mystery to me.
Sue, that sounds like a potential ice storm. Please be careful! At least you'll have generator power if it worsens.
