It seems the homeless situation has gone from bad to worse.
Not long ago we stayed a night at one of those now-closed rest areas. After midnight, 3 cars rolled in and several young men, clearly not homeless, got out and spray painted the bathrooms. And then shot off several rounds from a handgun on their way out. We talked to the DOT and they did finally catch at least one of them but they had been making this their weekend entertainment for quite some time, at multiple rest areas on the I-5 Interstate.

At this time the sign crew is waiting for a response from the head of the state government to make a decision as whether to close the rest area until a committee has been formed to study the cost to correct the error. They actually do not feel that this is an error but just good use of public use of tax dollar at work and actual question if this is really in Kentucky. This is just a temporary inconvenience and will be corrected in the next years physical budget using the allowed pork barrel clause which will include any cost overruns incurred due to the delays. Please direct any questions to the appropriate department head. There will be a press briefing scheduled on Friday afternoon at 3:00pm to answer any question from concerned citizens as to where they should park in the mean time.

I think you ruffled somebody's feathers there TwinBoat

Was the slot(s) with the lamp post any wider than the others?

I didn't measure the width but they all looked the same to me, except that the ones with light poles were empty.

They could have at least put a white stripe on each side of the post, and shifted the remaining spaces by the width of the concrete pillar. Which could have been painted yellow or white, with a reflective sticker or two wrapped around the pole. Some poor schmuck is going to scrape his/her trailer on that thing.

It's not even safe to go to the King County Courthouse...aka public safety building. Wouldn't surprise me to see a "rest area fee" added to the ever increasing list of Washington State vehicle registration fees to pay for irresponsible people's actions, a direct result from govt. mandated lack of enforcement.

Don't give the politicians any ideas! Here in Pa. They are implementing a rain water run off fee. I kid you not.

I really like the idea of a sign that tells you if the rest stop is full. when we were on our last trip had a hard time finding a rest stop that wasn't full. it would be nice to have the sensors and be able to look on line and see if a rest stop is full.

They already have that in Washington State only they call it a Storm Water fee and it is added to our property taxes.
