Engine blew 2576 miles after purchasing rig. 3 months gone in the middle of summer and a $33,000+ bill.

Long day, 106 degree weather as I attempted to remove that slideout bar and limp down the road. Only made it another 2 miles before having to bail off the highway.
Found out that evening that the frame had failed:
Made a new friend who ended up doing the work to straighten the frame, built and installed new steel cross member supports, and got us buttoned back up in 5 days. I helped as much as possible, but mechanically, I'm an idiot. My job was to get and hold stuff.
He and his wife refused payment though we did slip them a pile of Visa gift cards.
Their boys and my kids became fast friends and so did us adults.

I had bought my first MH, a 1974 class A Shasta 24' on a P-30 Chevy chassis, with the 454, turbo 400 3 speed auto. It had been totally redone on the inside with all new walls, fabrics, counters, everything done but the bathroom, so the GF and I tore into the bathroom, found that the skylight had leaked, and lots of rot! So rebuilt it all, got it done, was very proud of how it turned out!
Planned our first trip, loaded up the kids, and had a great weekend! Now toward the end of the weekend we noticed the smell from the toilet was getting strong, and it just seemed to keep getting worse, so on the way out of the CG, I stopped and dumped, and thought all was better! Well by the time we got back to town and was dropping off the kids at the BIL's house, I ask him, if he knew what was going on with the toilet and the black water tank? It still smelled bad, and when we pulled the black tank handle, nothing came out? You could flush the toilet, but it did not go into the black tank? Well, come to find out, it was a recirculating toilet, and it was full, and the BIL was searching around, found a cover on the front of the toilet, pulled that off, Dang, there is a pull handle! He yells found it, and pulls the handle, Whoosh! We had left the black tank dump valve open, and our weekend toilet contents went swoosh, all over his nice concrete driveway! Luckily, it wasn't that much, but still, took a lot of hosing down! And no one was in front of it when it let loose!
That old recirculating toilet was the next thing to get swapped out!
Rail!

Yeah that was very bad. You're very very lucky you didn't loose your foot, or worse with the door and floor ripped away!
We are all glad you two survived, and have it behind you....now enjoying your 2nd American Dream coach.

Saddlesore, yes it was a blowout. She did a thread on it at the time. Hell of a scary ride. Her husband did a great job getting it stopped without major (worse) disaster.

My worst day was when i blew a turbo on the highway not too far from home, I noticed the loss of power then did a double take when i looked in rear camera and everything was totally grey from the burning motor oil from the exhaust. Totally fogged the highway to near zero visibility for about 1/4 mile before I could get it off the road. I later met a man who recognized my rig and he was driving behind me when it happened!
It was my fault when I installed the turbo i used new manifold to turbo bolts that were slightly too long allowing a significant exhaust leak upstream of turbo so the turbo would reverse spin when exhaust brake closed, didnt take too long to shear the compressor shaft, lost a quart of oil down the exhaust.

Low tire
I noticed the RV had a low front tire while it was sitting under it's RV port. I quickly aired it up and watched it but it hasn't gone back down yet. That's been the worst so far.

Compared to some of your experiences, we have been super lucky! Only have had five bad things happened in the life of our coach. (Hope to keep it that way!)
When my step dad and mom purchased the coach new. A furniture delivery box truck removed the passenger mirror at an intersection. The delivery driver looked in his mirror as he heard the scraping against his truck. Instead of stopping he gunned it speeding off. Luckily we recognized the company name and drove two miles to that furniture store. The store manager gave my step-dad a check for repairs. The second for them was a rock that put a 2 foot long crack in the drivers windshield.
Since purchasing the rig from my mom, two years ago, the worst things to happen have been a 6" diameter tree limb landing on the rear A/C cover, slightly bending the sheet metal. Easy fix with a hammer and dolly. The second was a fried generator ignition module, in 104 degree heat. The last one was a fresh water tank leak. Luckily that was an easy repair, because we caught it as it happened.

On this trip I seem to have lost a bottle of whisky somewhere in the coach! I know it is in there somewhere but I can’t find it. Fortunately there are plenty of liquor stores and such that It has not been a true emergency![emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]
