Savannah at Christmas

My wife and I have decided to de-winterize the RV and head down to Savannah the week before Christmas. we'll be back in central Ohio on Christmas Eve as long as the weather holds out for us.

Deb has never been to Savannah although once I showed her pictures she can't wait to get there. She is very much into the architecture and definitely wants to visit some homes.

This trip will be our Christmas present to each other and we are looking forward to it. We have reservations at the Red Gate RV park which is very close to town and with the trolley stop right at the campground we won't even need to drive for most of the time.

If anyone has any suggestion as to "Must See" places I would love to hear them.

Thanks

I just got back from there and also stayed at Red Gate. We really liked the whole area, but unfortunately there still is damage showing from the hurricane, but they are cleaning it all up.
besides the tour and all the stops with that, (homes, cathedral, shopping and restaurants, graveyard, hang out on the riverfront, and all kinds of history) we also went to Fort Pulaski, Tybee island and the lighthouse and bunkers there, and ran over the bridge to Hilton Head.
Enjoy your trip, there is plenty to do, see and plenty to eat!!

If you like seafood don't miss the Crab Shack on Tybee Island.

It lies south of the causeway just prior to the island itself. Get the seafood platter.

We also spent time on the waterfront which has many boutiques and places to eat. (Girly stuff). Be careful as while the DW browsed a boutique I waited outside to avoid the Pot Pouri and was viciously bitten by many no seeum bugs that resided in potted vines by the entrance. Not kidding, they were really bad.

Take the trolley tours and see all the squares. The nice thing about the trolleys is that you can get off whenever you want, spend some time, and another will come along every thirty minutes so you can just get back on and continue. The Trolleys also solve the problem of parking as they have their own lots.

Savannah is one of the more "Historic" Cities in the USA, this means there are things to see and do all over the place.. Suggest you visit some place like Savannah News & Weather | Tybee, Hilton Head, Bluffton, Pooler | wsav.com (At least I think there is a www) that's one of the TV stations (NBC I think) The news department has an accuracy issue but the 'Events' page is very good.

(They run ads saying there were no cell phones or internet in mid 1990s, both were preasent in the 80's.. As I said, an accuracy issue).

Pretty much sounds like the week my wife and I spent there early this summer, we had a great time. I highly recommend trying to get one of the more secluded spots at the Red Gate, there are three of them off to the side, out of the pasture and under some large oaks. You won't be able to take advantage of the pool at Christmas, but we sure did in June. We didn't do any of the house tours, however a friend at work did and she really enjoyed it. The squares, monuments, statues, architecture and history are really interesting. My wife really enjoyed the Ghost Walk we did, I'm a confirmed skeptic, but the history lesson and stories are interesting. We also toured Wormsloe Historic Site, and enjoyed it, the oak lined drive is worth the visit.

We were there , for a night, a couple of weeks ago. We go there annually...sometimes twice a year.

Eating is the #2 adventure, just after the historic sights.

The best of Savannah is just walking through the neighborhoods. Take the trolley tour, then revisit the parts that peeked your interests.

The Old Pink house is our favorite restaurant. Paula Dean's is very near the riverfront , as well (good for the free corn cakes ) great lunch spot.

You can't miss, have a great time..probably the friendliest people anywhere.

Definitely take the trolley tour. River Street is a neat place to walk around with lots of little shops. It gets a little "sporty" with all the bars around there after dark.

Fort Pulaski is on the causeway on the way over to Tybee Island. If you have the time and the weather is nice, I'd suggest renting a golf cart on Tybee Island. Last Winter, it was $35 a day and you can drive it all over the island. If you take your car, they will charge you to park most places and you'll probably end up spending the $35 anyway in parking fees. Several good restaurants on the south end of the island. As you leave the island, on the left, there is a fishing marina. That's where all the locals go to buy fresh fish and shrimp.

Paula Dean's restaurant is over rated as far as I'm concerned. If your wife is a fan, you should do it at least once. Lots of good seafood in Savannah.

Enjoy your trip.
